But it turns out, according to Jiminez, that Shepard was a meth dealer himself and he was friends and sex partners with the man who led in his killing. Indeed, his killer may have killed him because Shepard allegedly came into possession of a large amount of methamphetamine and refused to give it up.

Whenever a male homosexual is murdered, if the murder was savage, often with genital mutilation, they automatically look for the decedents lover(s). And that is not unique to homosexuals, either.
Unless the killer is completely psychotic, they usually have little or no motivation for savagery, especially after their victim is dead. But when sexual emotionalism is involved, it can get grotesque.

Having said that, I'm not discounting the book either. It will be interesting to see what will happen if the book (based on recently unsealed court documents).
At the end, I suspect it wouldn't matter. Sheppard has been seen as a symbol, and it won't be easy to delete his name even if the book is right. Just like it doesn't matter if Al Gore's house used more energy than a small town or he goes places with private jet. He's already seen as a symbol for environmental movement.
This now discredited account will no doubt be retagged as a "larger truth." You see the same refusal to face facts in the Trayvon Martin aftermath.
