Wind turbine destroyed by wind (40 mph)
The Telegraph ^ | 9/4/2013

Posted on 09/04/2013 5:45:09 AM PDT by markomalley

Two blades were ripped from the 18m high turbine in the Scottish Highlands and thrown up to 60 yards away after it was hit by 40mph gales. A third was left badly buckled.

The incident has led to calls for all wind turbines to be removed from school playgrounds in the Highlands as the council’s safety trigger for turbines to be shut down currently stands at 80mph winds – 6mph above hurricane force.

No one was hurt when the turbine at Dunhobby, on Scrabster Hill, near Thurso, in the Highlands was destroyed, but there are fears turbines in playgrounds could put children at risk.

"Surely now Highland Council will take notice and remove wind turbines from school playgrounds. This is not an anti-wind farm issue but a safety one,” said Stuart Young, chairman of Caithness Wind Information Forum (CWIF).

He said turbines are currently in playgrounds at Castletown, Bower and Crossroads, where children are only metres away and called for the council to take action after the incident on Friday evening.

They were talking about putting these in Lake Ontario. Wonder what a water spout would do to one of these things. We have several here every year.

Not to mention the fact that it costs 2 to 3 times as much to erect and maintain them offshore.

Turbines on playgrounds could put children at risk? What genius put them there in the first place? Lets put large, powerful, unshielded rotating machinery near unsuspecting and inattentive kids. For added fun, lets make it autonomous, no operator on site to shut it down if there is a problem. Tbese are mechanical devices. They will break, they will wear out. Things go wrong, they are not immune to Murphy. When, not if, they break it can be pretty spectacular. Just search YouTube for turbine failures.

Life can be frustrating these days, but then the schmucks who make it so frustrating provide some much needed laughs.

I’m waiting for the global warming nuts to get trapped in icebergs. I would like to drive by in my suv, and chuckle at their frozen expressions.

Wow! We've got one right outside of Cleveland Stadium and I noticed it gets locked down on overly windy days (I understand the irony). I'm guessing they lock it down at about 30-40mph.

Yeah you can tell that oil and gas extraction is on the upswing here in Michigan because the democrats are desperately introducing regulatory anti fracking legislation pretty much every day. (about 7 last week)

Where,oh where, is “The 80’s, a Look Back” when I need it? It was a 1979 satirical look at the decade ahead, and it included a story (a la Three Mile Island) about a runaway wind turbine that destroyed a town.

We legislators introducing "no fracking bills" for areas.....where there is no gas like they're protecting their voters from great harm. What a bunch of idiots.

My buddy turned down an offer on his property in the Southern tier after being frightened to death by these jerks. He's kicking himself in the pants now.

This makes perfect sense, as it is being pushed by leftist environmentalists. Indeed, Solar panels are destroyed by the sun: my landscape lighting don’t last more than one season, as the sun’s UV does them in.
