As the war drums for Syria get louder, let this thread serve as a repository for news, background, Tweets, photos, video, on-the-ground reports, etc., as was done recently with Egypt.

There will always be boots on the ground, as you know, even when there is no war. I think it’s just common for Pres. to say no boots on the ground to appease the public...remember it was said for Libya too...and yet there were indeed troops on the ground.

BTW As I see it...when you have 17,000 or more foreign fighters coming into a nation...that’s an invasion....they estimate that is how many are in Syria and likely more.

So if BO goes into Syria, and he dang better not!...our guys will be up against these creeps who kill their own...so it will be nothing for them to turn on our guys....we simply cannot go in there...it would be a death wish on any American from both sides.

That is why I don’t understand why there is not more opposition for this war/attack. How many more of our Military do we have to lose. It is a f’*#%^@ disgrace. I don’t want to lose one more person over there...

Arms are going into Syria from every direction....Arab nations, Russia, France...doesn’t matter...they’re getting armed one way or another...the Jihadists often steal them when they know where they are headed...

I saw a video today of the Turkey military assisting the Jihadists right on the border, loading up supplies etc.

There are many international hands throwing gas on this this Syrian fire!

...” I don’t understand why there is not more opposition for this war/attack”....

That would depend on where you want to see that opposition....there are demonstrations hapening around the world....But if you expect to see much from the American people this early on it won’t happen...takes a lot for them to leave their couches etc....... And with the press as it is you won’t hear about it much either....until someone gives them green light.

Interesting that Saudi couldn’t get the Arab league to support Obama’s strike......and they were pushing hard for that in Cairo today.

So Obam doesn’t even have the Arab League behind him....

He’s batting Zero all the way around.

Yes indeed it would benefit the Jihadists...which is why the Jihadists had their pants in a knot when BO said he’d take it to congress......

I do not want to see any of our Military guys on Syrian soil for any reason...or even risk they’d get shot down there. Those people are beastly animals and would torture them horribly.

Some of the Syrians bought hand gernades because it was better to blow themselves up when the Jihadists were entering their homes then to be captured and in the hands of the Jihadists.

I still think there are many people who do not grasp the extent of torture and utter wickedness of these terrorists....they ‘are’ killing machines...drugged up to decapitate and cut and mame and torture... brutal hardly says enough.

Fighting Continues Across Syria

Heavy fighting continued throughout Syria yesterday, with Damascus bearing the brunt of it. Many of the locations on the 'heatmap' below indicate regime bombardments and airstrikes, but in Aleppo the rebels took the offensive, with attacks on a military checkpoint near al-Safira and a fuel center

A closer look at Damascus shows a significant amount of fighting in the northern Barzeh neighborhood. The village of Mo’adamiyeh al-Sham, the site of one of the alleged chemical attacks of August 21st, also continues to be the target of regime bombardments.

‘Unconfirmed’... social media reports... indicate that there has been an uptick in regime strikes particularly in Damascus following President Obama’s announcement that the U.S. will seek congressional authorization before conducting operations against the Syrian regime.

I think everyone is flabbergasted just what is it that Obama wants....we know he’s seeking to save face for the most part...but I still say he went to congress because he wants to be able to do ‘more’ than just a so called surgical strike...if he gets congressional approval to ‘enlarge’ his idea of “punishing Assad”.....then it’s more than just a slap in the face Obam is looking for.

You may be correct, but I believe Obama feared impeachment without first getting authorization from Congress to commit our troops. Also, the military cautioned against it, from what I understand.

Then again, if the chemical attack by Syria was a false flag and the insurgents were responsible and Obama knows it, he would go down big time ....

RT:

Monday, September 2

10:21 GMT: Hezbollah has promised to retaliate by firing surface-to-surface missiles at Israel if it decides to partake in the strike against Damascus.

“Hizbullah is controlling 8,000 kilometers in Reef Homs and will not hesitate to participate in an attack by firing surface-to-surface missiles from Syria,” said a source from a joint operation run by Hezbollah and the forces of President Assad, as reported by the Kuwaiti al-Rai newspaper.

10:00 GMT: The war in Syria has displaced 7 million Syrians, or almost one-third of the population, the head of the UN refugee agency, Tarik Kurdi, says. Two million children are among those directly affected by the war. Kurdi stressed that UN assistance has been a “drop in the sea of humanitarian need” and that the funding gap is “very, very wide.”

09:49 GMT: Syria’s army is on high alert and will “remain so until terrorism is completely eradicated,” a security official in Damascus said Monday.

09:25 GMT: Foreign Minister Lavrov met with his South-African counterpart to discuss a range of issues including Syria, on which he said that “The framework for [the Geneva peace talks on Syria] was in place”, but that partners who side with the US strike are less interested in bringing the rebels to the negotiating table than they are in creating a “controlled chaos”. He added that this puts the peace talks in danger, and finally, that a strike would only allow extremism to flourish, instead of creating a stable transition that everyone seems to desire.

08:15 GMT: The US has briefed China about evidence on the use of chemical weapons in Syria, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Hong Lei, said during a daily news briefing on Monday. Hong did not say what China thought of the evidence, but reiterated that China opposes the use of chemical weapons by any side, adding that Beijing supported the independent, objective investigation by the UN experts.

07:39 GMT: Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said that a ‘regime of secrecy’ by the West is unacceptable with regard to Syria and evidence of the use of chemical weapons there.

“If there truly is top secret information available, the veil should be lifted. This is a question of war and peace. To continue this game of secrecy is simply inappropriate,” Lavrov said during an address to the students of the Moscow State University of International Relations.

Lavrov has called the information provided to Russia by the US ‘inconclusive’.

“We were shown some sketches, but there was nothing concrete, no geographical coordinates or details... and no proof the test was done by professionals... there were no comments anywhere regarding the experts’ doubt about the footage circulating all over the internet,” Lavrov said.

He added that “what our American, British and French partners have shown us before - as well as now - does not convince us at all. There are no supporting facts, there is only repetitive talk in the vein of ‘we know for sure.’ And when we ask for further clarification, we receive the following response: ‘You are aware that this is classified information, therefore we cannot show it to you.’ So there are still no facts.”

French MPs to see ‘evidence’ of Syria chemical weapons

French PM Jean-Marc Ayrault will present France’s evidence that chemical weapons were used in Syria, when he meets parliamentary leaders on Monday.

The dossier is said to show that Syria has stockpiled more than 1,000 tonnes of chemical agents, including sarin.

French President Francois Hollande, like US President Barack Obama, wants punitive military action against Syria.

But there is growing pressure for a parliamentary vote on the issue, to be in line with the US and also Britain.

Syria’s Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad has told the BBC that any such military action would amount to “support for al-Qaeda and its affiliates”.

He also said that armed groups backed by America - not Syrian troops - had used chemical weapons.
