The Farmers' Almanac is using words like "piercing cold," ''bitterly cold" and "biting cold" to describe the upcoming winter. And if its predictions are right, the first outdoor Super Bowl in years will be a messy "Storm Bowl."
The 197-year-old publication that hits newsstands Monday predicts a winter storm will hit the Northeast around the time the Super Bowl is played at MetLife Stadium in the Meadowlands in New Jersey. It also predicts a colder-than-normal winter for two-thirds of the country and heavy snowfall in the Midwest, Great Lakes and New England.
"We're using a very strong four-letter word to describe this winter, which is C-O-L-D. It's going to be very cold," said Sandi Duncan, managing editor.
Based on planetary positions, sunspots and lunar cycles, the almanac's secret formula is largely unchanged since founder David Young published the first almanac in 1818.

Obviously, they don't, but their theories are probably based on ice cores and tree ring samples, coupled with solar historical records, such as they are.
Granted, there's a lot of extrapolation done from the relatively shorter solar cycles.
I live in Dahlonega so it is cooler but the overall
trend is to colder weather.
I lived in downtown in the 80s when we had over
thirty days in a row of 100 plus weather.
What a nightmare too hot to sleep.

Today is gonna be a major league scorcher with all the heat and humidity.
If the quoted 80% correct prediction rate is accurate, that’s 5x what the locals can boast. Isn’t the “European Model” more accurate than the “US Model”?

2013: Man-made Global Climate change is the reason we have fewer hurricanes and colder winters.
This summer, it's usually been low 70s high 60s at night for me. But we have had 3 nights of about 60 and a few more close to it.
Normal summer August night temps for here are high 70s, sometimes low 80s.
douglasville here, to me its been hot as H#LL!! tired of sweating all the time... bring on the cold!!!

I noticed that last week too.
I predict we will have autumn temps about 6w early.
We had ‘spring’ temps about 6w later than normal too. I had FROST in my yard on May 3. And I’m south of Jtown.

Yes indeed... the frost will soon be on the pumpkin! I noticed that the Dogwoods started shedding today.
