Why don't whites have black friends?

White people are products of their own whitewashed, sanitized environment. Black people have been systematically excluded from white neighborhoods. Black stories rarely surface in popular culture. The history of race in high school textbooks has been boiled down to a handful of bedtime stories about Jackie Robinson and Rosa Parks. Try to tap into the average white person's feelings on race and you won't necessarily find feelings of hate and antipathy. You just won't find much of anything, no fully formed or well-considered thoughts about race of any kind. There's nothing really there. Even white people who want black friends don't know where to start.

That reminds me of a story:

One day, when I was in community college, we were in the classroom waiting for Trig class to start. A guy poked his head in the door and asked if we were going to use the projector left there by a previous class.

“No. Come on and get it,” we said.

This guy was African-American, and as he was packing up the projector to move, he looked around and asked, “Ain’t y’all got any black folks in this class?”

“No”, we replied

“Why not?” he inquired.

“I guess nobody signed up for it.” we answered.

“Well, why don’t y’all put your money together, and buy you one?”

I live in Oregon...and NOT (THANK GOD) in Portland. Look up the “black” population of the state. That said I believe ALL people like to spend time with like minded people.

I think its pure phoney baloney to try to be diverse with your friends.....friends come along rarely as it is, and they're usually associated with your work, your church, your family.....

friends just don't appear because you want them too....

personally, I wish I knew more Jews....

besides, its not whites who are clannish....whites are embarrassingly too willing to be "open" to too many people, to our detriment...

More of the DNC’s on going sectarian violence .

With a population of 14% , it’s not possible for all whites to have black friends.

It’s science.

Am I suppose to keep some quota of friends by race, religion, creed or sexual identity?

Blacks are just so offended all the time, and I know it is not all of them, the ones I know that think like me get grief from their own community, they get called Uncle Toms, they get called Geeks but words don’t hurt them.

MLK Jr was about that. let a man be judged by his character.

I grew up with blacks,italians,irish,lebonese,syrians,greeks,orthodox russian,ukraine,estonia,scotts,welsh

Was called a Honky or Hunkie all my life, even though I consider myself a Dumb Mick.
We called the Italians Dagos, they laughed, we were all brothers.
There is only one group in that place and in the US that is perpetually pissed.

The Underground railway was in my town.
You can find the hideaways today.

I would love being friends with Clarence Thomas, but not Al Sharpton. Has nuttin’ to do with their skin pigment. One is a genius, the other a race-baiting hate monger punk with a failing cable show.

"Actually, there is at least about 60-70% of the white race I don’t want anything to do with."

I know what you mean.....I'm at the age where I just don't care to be around anyone who is against any of my values.....the heck with them.....

Just look at any neighborhood that used to be primarily white, and is now primarily black.

It will tell you everything you need to know.

My aunt and uncle lived on a pretty side street in a nice established neighborhood. When I was like 8 we used to play on the streets and have a blast.

Then they built “the projects” across the street. Within 5 years it was unsafe to walk the streets. There was garbage and graffiti all over, nearly every house on the street had been broken into.

Many moved out and within 10 years the property values had fallen to nearly nothing. I remember my aunt selling her house for $1700 cash, I was there when the lady paid her.

This is a house with beautiful old woodwork and marble stairs and amazing hardwood floors and leaded windows. In a nice neighborhood now it would be worth $400,000

10 years later I drove by and it had boarded up windows, cracked siding falling off, the driveway was oil stains and the landscaping was all overgrown with weeds.

The entire neighborhood looked like a demilitarized zone.

Now what was the question again?

My word, these folks are really getting pretty tiresome.

It like that old comedy sketch where some guy has died and enters the elevator to go to heaven, but Pachelbel’s Canon is playing, and the elevator never opens, and it dawns on him eventually that he’s in hell.

Only, in our case it’s some tired old spiritual or Whitney Houston squealing or something.

I've no doubt if I met a black conservative male or female it would grow into a solid friendship on both ends. I've had liberal black friends and let's just say the blackness has been the central view of their conversation. Which honestly is odd when one thinks about it.

If all I basically did was say to people you can't dance because your (insert non white color here) or say you wouldn't understand you're not white. It would be both racist and just an obvious sign I have some real anger issue and other psychological issues that need addressing. Mental and intellectual as well as spiritual drive to health for me is something I desire in myself and my friendships. Thus I can see myself with a conservative black friend as their is already a rebel and someone who has spiritual, intellectual, and psychological courage.

one day it dawned on me that those people were the only people I knew where I had to be very careful of ever word, every phrase or even inflictions.

And no matter how careful you are, even totally innocent and harmless slips bring on "that look."

I have a black neighbor. We have almost nothing in common. He's a racist who once told me to my face that white people are devils. He's clever but not really smart. He has an MA degree but he's uneducated except in how to use the system. He's condescending and uses his very large physical size in a bullying way. Why the hell would I want to be friends with him? He doesn't want to be friends with me. We simply wave and otherwise ignore each other.

I'll bet Parks gets more coverage than many of our founding fathers.
