Bloomberg’s Public Housing Fingerprinting Idea Stuns, Infuriates Residents
CBS ^ | 16 Aug 13 | Staff

Posted on 08/16/2013 6:58:14 PM PDT by SkyPilot

Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s latest crime-fighting idea had a lot of people riled up on Friday.

The mayor wants to fingerprint more than 600,000 people who live in public housing. He said it would be done to make the projects safer.

Bloomberg was responding to questions about Federal Judge Shira Schendlin’s ruling on the stop-and-frisk program when the topic shifted to security and the New York City Housing Authority. Bloomberg said there has to be a way to make the projects safer.

“Five percent of our population lives in NYCHA housing, 20 percent of the crime is in NYCHA housing – numbers like that. And we’ve just got to find some way to keep bringing crime down there. And we have a whole group of police officers assigned to NYCHA housing,” Bloomberg said. “The people that live there, most of them, want more police protection. They want more people. If you have strangers walking in the halls of your apartment building, don’t you want somebody to stop and say, ‘Who are you, why are you here?’”

But residents who live within the confines of NYCHA buildings said the mayor’s fingerprinting idea goes too far.

“That’s like invading someone’s privacy or something. Why you want to fingerprint somebody? It is bad enough you get arrested, you get finger printed, so why you want to fingerprint us? Now Bloomberg needs to get a job. Get out of here already. He’s done. Bloomberg is done,” Chelsea Houses resident Nino Alayon said.

“Why? For what? We live here all these years, I mean, what seems to be the problem? This is not jail,” added Deborah Gatling of the Chelsea Houses.

“I don’t feel that that’s right. Fingerprinted for what?” resident Alberta Hale added.

Excellent comment.

My only criticism — ordering residents to go get jobs will only work when the job market has need for employees, and that is when the economy begins to expand. Right now the markets are tanking and there are no jobs available. So how can you order someone to get something that doesn’t readily exist?

Providing depression era-style make work will only go so far, as someone must provide the money to pay for the make-work. Socialism is the problem here, and we shouldn’t acerbate this problem further.

Granted, there are things that can be done immediately to relieve stresses on the system: send illegal aliens home, like President Eisenhower did in the 1950s, freeing up jobs and opportunities for our citizens, for one.

In the small city in which I live, the EBT users make up 50% of the city population. FIFTY PERCENT! When the economy does collapse, this place will be in chaos. Even now there are thefts from community garden plots.

The top rated comment from the CBS site:

Put me in charge of food stamps. Food Stamp ATM cards could only be used for food without the ability to get cash. No money for junk food, alcohol, tobacco, or sodas - just money for 50-pound bags of rice and beans, blocks of cheese and all the powdered milk you can haul away.

Hows this sound? Not only should they get only bags of rice and beans and be fingerprinted, but they should have bio-chips implanted on them so they can be tracked. And undergo sterilization so they can’t have kids? And put in internment camps surrounded by barbed wire and guarded by troops like FDR did with Japanese-Americans? No tv, radio, or newspapers, and no electricity or candles. If it gets dark out, they have to go to sleep. And in order to pay for their food and shelter, all the men, women, AND children must work on chain gangs 20 hours a day. And NO medical care.

How does this sound? If you take Food Stamps, public housing, AND public medical care, you are such a drain on society that you can not vote. you also must pass a drug test to receive TANF welfare, Food Stamps, or other unearned entitlements.

Do not presume that by posting the top comment on that site that I advocate bio chipping and other aspects that will lead to the mark of the beast. I hate those. I hate the coming Antichrist, but it is coming, and there is no stopping it.

Personally, I’m not against drug testing for food stamps. My main and only concern is that there are probably a host of parents who are users and to shut them off inadvertently affects their children. So, its a no win situation for all concerned.

I find it difficult at times to separate the libs from the so-called conservatives on this site.

I only awoke to the fact that we REALLY are in an Economic DEPRESSION last year. There are Freepers who will starve without their Social Security check, and they miss meals. I know. I have talked to them. We are in are very bad trench, and the media have lied so much that many believe the lies. But I also see that EVERYONE is afraid. The well off are afraid of losing their stocks and overpaid jobs. The pensioners are afraid they will lose their payments. The takers are afraid their EBT, Section 8, and TANF cash will stop. Our god is not government, God is God. That is the solution........Jesus is the answer.

I fear what you fear....tyranny. We already have it. Google the photos of the illegal Militarized “police” in Watertown and Cambridge MA. he dilemma you face is that the takers have no restrictions on them whatsoever. they cheat with their votes. they cheat with their EBT cards. They take, and take. As an Air Force officer, I had to submit to fingerprinting, and I flew the latest multimillion dollar jets. No one rides for free. Not anymore. Maybe we could all move to upper Canada, but the Canadians might have something to say about that.

“Ultimately, he’s clamping down on black and Hispanic criminals in NYC while couching it in ethnically neutral terms.”

He is trying to create a playground for the 1%-ers. He is one of the most socially liberal people in the world, and thinks of other people as nothing more than cattle. His societal curbs are based on nothing more than his own views (pot-smoking and sodomy are OK, but large soft drinks aren’t); he is the epitome of the commissars who intend to rule us (worse than Obama in regard to personal freedoms, in my opinion).

“If you receive SS and Medicare, then the government is paying for your retirement.”

Really? I’ve been contributing from my paychecks for over 25 years for these, and will have to contribute for another 25 to collect. I’ve been paying for my SS/Medicare (and that of many others that haven’t paid anything for generations, if ever).

I like rules attached to hand outs of our tax dollars. The LIBS here will tell you that taxpayers do not pay for anything like SNAP, Section 8 housing vouchers, etc. You could have bet that one would question your math. There are always 1-2 smart alecs who look for one mistake or spelling error. WHY? TOO MUCH FREE TIME?

Bloomberg is more of a Helmut Kohl Social Democrat (without the labor background). The sooner he and pig Kelly are gone from our Constituional Republic, the better.

When someone goes on the dole, there should be some accountability.

If they don’t want to give up their *rights*, then go out and get a job like the rest of us.
