Obamacare targets "Young Invincibles" demographic

(CBS News) LOS ANGELES - In about seven weeks, Americans can start buying health insurance on the new exchanges that will be part of the Affordable Care Act.

Thursday, the Obama administration announced $67 million in awards to more than 100 organizations that will help people understand their options.

The key to the success of what the president himself calls "Obamacare" is getting young folks to sign up.

Jordan Zavaleta is what the health care industry calls a "young invincible." He's 26 and has no health insurance, largely because it's expensive to buy on his own and he rarely gets sick.

"In the past couple of years that I've been living on my own, I've seen a doctor once," he said. "I want to play soccer. I want to surf. I want to be active. I want to do all these things that could potentially get me very hurt. And if that happens, I'd like to be covered."

An estimated 19 million young adults under the age of 34 do not have health insurance, according to Health and Human Services. By 2014, Americans are mandated to have coverage or will have to pay a $95 fine or 1 percent of their income. Many will qualify for subsidized insurance through new health care exchanges created by Obamacare.

"When young people have that option, they get it. They'll get insured," said Tamika Butler, the California director for Young Invincibles, a group helping young adults get coverage.

"When young people are insured, it's going to bring down the cost for everybody because we're relatively healthy," Butler said. "In order to make this law successful, we really need to get everyone insured."

The government's goal is to enroll 7 million Americans in the exchanges by next spring. For the system to work...

In the olden days when I too was young and invincible, I always bought health care insurance even though I didn’t have much money and it meant not buying other things. Back then if you didn’t pay for medical services, you didn’t get them.

More BS propaganda from the White House. They’re pushing national health insurance. The Obamamess is just an interim step towards that goal.

What's preventing you from getting coverage?

Compulsory insurance coverage. The precedent was established when states required auto insurance as a condition for registering and licensing a vehicle. Once they get their foot in the door, the only way to stop them is to slam the door, hard. The only way to stop obamanation care is for the majority of Americans to give the feds and their IRS enforcer goons the collective middle finger. Just remember, it they want it, make them pay dearly for it, and at too high of a cost for them to keep pursuing it.

It's the only way Ponzi schemes ever get off the ground. But even then they inevitably fail. And that's where the Single Payer comes in ...

Yep and I had Blue Cross which was not like it is now. You paid up front and then had to fill out paperwork to be reimbursed. The horror!

Most young people are best served by purchasing a very low cost health insurance program that primarily protects them from catastrophic or unforeseen major medical expenses.

The money saved can be applied to getting an education and the typical middle class goals of buying a starter home , a car and other aspects of staring an independent life.

Having to pay much of their discretionary income on very high mandated ObamaCare premiums to cover the free health care of other people riding our entitlement system is going to make it very hard to start an independent life of their own.

The Democrats are betting that they will have a lock on running the country before all the people who supported them figure out they have become slaves to the system and realize just how badly they have been screwed.

Apparently he spends all of his money on frivolous and potentially dangerous leisure time activities.

That's illegal now.

Yes it is.

“Socializing “ the cost of medical care fundamentally means taking more money from healthy people who don't need medical care and spending it on the care of those who do but do not pay the full costs of their care.

In essence, the healthy subsidize those who are using the system or defrauding the system ( I include fraud because audits consistently find 20-60% of Government healthcare dollars go to fraudulent charges) for those the costs of the non payers

The problem with spreading the costs is very simple - to many non payers riding the system and too few paying into the system.

Now young people will have carry a lot of the burden because there simply are not enough payers to spread the costs.

I don't think understanding is the goal. If young, healthy adults understand that they are being overcharged to subsidize others, there is no way they will volunteer to pay. Why not wait until they are sick and then sign up?

No, under 30s will still be able to purchase a high-deductible policy.

Young people up to age 30 will have the option to enroll in high-deductible plans with low premiums. These “catastrophic coverage” plans have $8,000 or $10,000 deductibles, but they protect people from huge medical bills. “Young invincibles” don’t think they will get sick, so they don’t think they need health insurance. These high-deductible, low-cost plans will be available to people under 30.
