Saw this coming from a mile away, once the Supreme Court essentially ruled in the Prop 8 case that ANY opposition to gay rights or gay marriage is based on bigotry and therefore irrelevant it opened the door for every liberal Federal Court Judge in the nation to do their best to stretch that ruling as far as they can if for no other reason than to get another case before the Supreme Court as fast as possible to achieve their ultimate goal of having the court pull another imaginary constitutional right out of their orifice (ala abortion). Then gay marriage will be the law of the land and it won't matter if your states constitution forbids it and 80% of the public opposes it.

The insurance should not be an issue, as the partner can be named as beneficiary on any life insurance. Where this would come into play, would be to allow the “spouse” to automatically inherit all or some of the assets. Without the “spouse”, those assets would likely be split (depending on Ohio law) between parents, children, or siblings of the decedent, assuming no valid will is in place. So this would allow the spouse to trump other blood relatives for part or all of the assets at death.
