Josh Miller never gave much thought to where his car, bed or toothpaste came from until an aluminum plant in his hometown of Ravenswood, West Virginia, shut down about four years ago.

The closure left 650 people without a job, including Miller's father-in-law, in a town of roughly 3,800, triggering a familiar pattern. The unemployment rate in Jackson County more than doubled, businesses shuttered and Ravenswood's quaint downtown became a ghost town.

That thing about “creating” Democrats cracks me up—seeing that when I worked in the steel industry, I’d get to sit in my office on a Friday (having to work late, again), and get to watch my Teamsters pulling out of the lot at 5pm in their shiny new F-250’s, bass boat in tow . . . .

You are assuming that closed aluminum plant in the story was unionized. Do you know that?

I just bought a set of Lodgeware, too. Nothin’ cooks like cast iron! I lost some pans in a recent move, so I was on the lookout. I found a number of pans made by a company called Tramontina at Tuesday Morning; I got a couple of saucepans. I’m set and Made in AMERICA. ;)

Yes we can see the results of it all across the country.

Eliminated jobs.
Money shipped overseas to pay for materials and labor.
Knowledge shipped overseas.
Increased ‘profits’ which are then shipped overseas.
Control of American companies shipped overseas.

Doomers, as a rule, don't like facts that get in the way of their doom.

Doom, it's what protectionists and other economic illiterates eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The only solution is higher taxes and more regulations.

Let's force those companies to hire Americans. Force them to manufacture here.

So what if they can't make money, make 'em do it anyway!

boy that was predictable

how about not letting other countries buy our most precious knowledge, processes, and companies and then shipping everything overseas?

How about not giving them tax breaks for shipping jobs overseas? To companies subsidized by the govt in those countries. Heck in some cases the companies are owned by the foreign govt.

How about reducing regulations here to make America more competitive? The cost of labor is only one minor component.

Tell that to the people who’ve lost their manufacturing jobs to overseas workers. Try buying a set of towels, a toaster, an iPhone or even furniture actually “made in America.” Exports don’t tell the whole story. An American company can export goods bearing their name that were made somewhere else.

And silly. But that's what the big government conservatives are pushing.

how about not letting other countries buy our most precious knowledge, processes, and companies and then shipping everything overseas?

Which of these is so vital that we must prevent the owners from selling? Give me a list and we can discuss it further.

How about not giving them tax breaks for shipping jobs overseas?

I usually hear that claim from liberals. They never provide proof for their claim either.

How about reducing regulations here to make America more competitive?

What are you, some sort of free trader?

If free trade is so good why are 40+ million Americans on food stamps while Chinese eat caviar and drive million dollar cars?

“Which of these is so vital that we must prevent the owners from selling? Give me a list and we can discuss it further. “

I’m not your lackey, go f yourself.

Free trade is about redistribution of wealth, America’s wealth.

Pure and simple.

Awww, you poor girl.

Make a claim and no back up, that's a shock.

You're the only one who gets to decide how wealth should be distributed.

Kill the greedy kulaks, eh comrade?

Wrong, you idiot.

I want to make America stronger by making government smaller.

Big government conservatives, like you, want to make government more powerful, to force people to do what you feel will make America stronger.

Your way never works.
