It’s time for the Seattle Chamber Music Festival! We have a concert scheduled for Friday, July 19. Thanks to the miracle of the Internet, you can hear the concerts live at the website of KING-FM. I’ll be providing programs and links to the concerts throughout the summer festival. As we approach each concert, I’ll introduce one piece per evening at the Canteen with commentary about the piece. On concert nights, I’ll introduce the musicians.

Bohuslav Martinu (1890-1959) was a Czech who settled in Paris like so many composers of the era. He was a follower of Stravinsky and prolific composer in all forms. When the Germans arrived in France in 1940 he fled to New York where he stayed for 15 years before settling in Switzerland.

One of his most successful students in America was songwriter Burt Bacharach.

You Are a Healthy Shopper
You love to shop for the healthiest and freshest food possible. You are very aware of what you put in your body.
You prefer to cook at home - that way you know exactly what is going into every meal you cook.

You stay away from prepared and overly processed foods. And you go organic and natural whenever possible.
Eating healthy is not a chore for you. You know how to make the healthiest meals taste great!

You Are a Quick Shopper
You're a speedy shopper and a speedy cook. You value efficiency above all else.
You don't want to spend a lot of time in the kitchen... or in the grocery store!

You buy a lot of convenience foods, and you've got making quick meals at home down to a science.
You know what's cheap, healthy, and easy. You don't need a lot of fuss to eat well.

I guess you didn’t hear...My friend and travel companion died in my arms in an open helicopter over Hilo. I tried to do CPR but we were both strapped in the back and couldn’t move.
I got the pilot to turn around and speed back to the airport where the EMTs were waiting for us, but it was too late.

You Are a Budget Shopper
You're on a budget, but that doesn't mean you don't eat well. You really know how to stretch your dollars.
You cook from scratch to save money, and you never let a good sale or coupon pass you buy.

Eating at home is already cheaper than going out to eat, but for you, the savings keep coming.
You don't sacrifice taste or quality. With a little ingenuity, you're pocketing a ton more money while eating great food.

What We Talk About

July 17, 2013

Perhaps you are familiar with the saying, “Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.” Admittedly, there are ways to speak of people that can honor them. But this saying highlights our darker experiences. In a world of ever-present media—social and professional—we are continually confronted with people’s lives at a level of intimacy that can be inappropriate.

Worse, this tidal wave of personal information about others could become grist for our conversational mills to the point that gossip becomes the norm—and not just about the rich and famous. People in our workplaces, churches, neighborhoods, and families can also be targets of sharp tongues and feel the pain of discussions that never should have happened.

How can we escape our inclination to use words to hurt others? By recognizing that the ultimate Hearer of our words is God, who longs for us to be better than that. With the psalmist, we can pray, “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord” (Ps. 19:14). When we seek to please God with our conversations about others, we honor Him. With His help, we can glorify Him through what we talk about.

Forgive me, Father, for the times my speech
crosses the line of that which is appropriate.
Help me to understand the power of words,
and give me the wisdom to use them well.
It is better to bite your tongue than to make a biting remark.

Read: Psalm 19

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord. —Psalm 19:14
Bible in a Year:
Psalms 18-19; Acts 20:17-38

Hi, Ma!

*Ahem*

Men buy groceries. We know what we want before we enter.
We select, gather and put our finds in the shopping cart with at least one wobbly caster, or wheel.

We push the cart to the check out line and pay CASH.

Scientists world round have spent aeons trying to discern and unfold the mystery of “shopping”. And will continue to do so until government grants run out.

Securing my Soap Box.
Carry on.

Thank You, Sweet FRiend.

Lil was my dear friend for over 35 years. She was an amazing woman, was involved with smuggling Bibles into Iron Curtain Countries, coordinating the effort to rescue Ceausescu’s 17,000 orphans in Romania, and smuggling Bibles (under a burkha) into some very nasty countries in Central Asia under the noses of the Taliban.

She also just came back from the Himalayas, so a little helicopter ride over an erupting volcano was not a big deal, and I am sure that was not what caused her heart attack. I think God gifted her with the very best and coolest way to go home, with me beside her. (The last shot in her camera was a second before the attack, so she was having a great time.)
