Where is the Hispanic Community?

Where is the Hispanic community? Why the silence in regards to the Trayvon Martin case? Here we have a Hispanic man that has been placed on the alter of Al Sharpton, to be sacrificed for Democratic Party politics. Yet the Hispanics have turned their backs on Zimmerman and remained silent.

what’s the difference between a Mexican and a Hispanic?

Seriously, it is a good question. Living in New Mexico for several years opened my eyes to some of the politics in the "Hispanics" community. There are huge differences between, Cubans, Puerto Ricans, Mexican, South Americans.... At the root, "Hispanics" are those that trace their ancestry to Spain. Mexicans, most have Spanish ancestry, All the upper class in Mexico are probably mostly Spanish by ancestry, but the poor Mexicans are mixed with are primarily natives.

In New Mexico it is a huge deal. The native Hispanics trace their families to the original settlers to the area, who came over from Spain and settled in the area long before there even was a "Mexico", they do not identify with Mexico at all.....in fact it is a huge insult to call a native New Mexican a "Mexican American"... The same sort of relationships within their communities apply to others such as Cubans, Puerto Ricans, etc... Its the stuff you will never hear in the lamestream media, they want to portray all Hispanics as a monolithic group....

Those groups are already out there. In this case, they couldn’t step forward because they would be deflating the impact of their fellow travelers race baiting the Martin issue.

La Raza, MALDEF, La Mecha, and others are poised to step up for a myriad off issues once this doesn’t involve going up against another Leftist effort.

You are right in that. Once granted legal status here, Katie bar the door...

The answer is that a Mexican is from a country, Mexico - and a Hispanic does not exist. It is an invented generic term intended to designate all Spanish-speakers as an undifferenciated mass - which they are not. There are Spanish-speakers who are white and blond, others who are Negro, others who are various types of Indian - and combinations of all of the above. There are Spanish speakers who are millionaires, university professors, average middle class people, unskilled laborers, and illiterates on welfare.

You make some good points, but I want to mention something.

Even for Blacks, it’s not generally the Black populace themselves making all the noise. In most instances it’s the agitators like Sharpton, Jackson, the NAACP, politicians and other loud mouthed advocacy groups speaking for Blacks.

In the Hispanic community there is more diversification, but that’s not going to stop La Raza, MALDEF, Mecha, politicians and other groups from fronting for them as if they were one people.

I agree with everything you observed, and I’ve seen it myself at first hand. Concerning American blacks, their problems are more cultural and ethnic than racial. One of their biggest problems isn’t with the black lower classes, but with the black middle classes, who refuse to take their lower-class brethren to task for their pathologies. It’s a solidarity that does no one any kind of good.

This is like asking where the Scottish community is, especially when you’re mentioning South American Hispanics. They’re like 19th Century emigrants to the US. They believe in individualism and not tribalism and even less collectivism.

“It could be that the average Hispanic doesn’t have as strong a sense of “racial” identity as the average black.”

We can hope so. In a generation or two they will assimilate. The “average black” doesn’t seem to have any such interest.

Mexican is indeed a nationality. Hispanic isn’t a race; it’s a language group, like Arab. We have nothing equivalent for we English-speakin’ hombres, but we should.

There is no “hispanic” community just as there is no “hispanic” race, just a collection of various races and ethnic groups that happen to come from Latin American. Of course, our own country is the only one mentally challenged enough to classify a European-descended Latin American as “nonwhite” but an Arab or Armenian as “white.”

He’s Peruvian, not Mexican?!?!

He is 1/4 Peruvian, 1/4 black, 1/2 Jewish. I believe I heard that.

Do you think Peruvians are from Mexico?

And if Zimmerman DOES get whacked by some black “activist”, I rather suspect that suddenly you’re going to see some serious, violent pushback. . .

Peru is in South America. They can migrate up through South and Central America and through Mexico, into the United States. But outside of that, no they are not from Mexico.

Since the term itself originally referred to the Latin American countries, never mind mecha, aztlan, la raza, ad nauseum, it is still just an ethnic label, nothing more. Many people prefer Latino/Latina, which at least refers to a person, rather than a place. And no one carries much water for those racist organizations in Texas, except lunatic California imports in far south Texas and liberal
Austin.

I did not say it had anything to do with “culture”, and if there is an insistence on putting labels on an ethnic group, then call it “persons descended from ancestors who emigrated to the new world/Americas after 1500 AD”.

The reason those natives/indigenous people/Indians in the Americas were forced into speaking Spanish and acting according to European mores, was because they were slaves-right along with Blacks taken to the Caribbean, courtesy of the Spaniards, beginning with Hernan Cortez. They were conquered peoples, and back then, that meant that you got sold into slavery.

Their culture(s) became combined with those of the Spanish, and now, 500 years down the road has elements of both, from our Catholic celebrations, various dialects of the Spanish language, to the commonly served foods.

And this has very little to do with George Zimmerman-who was rightly judged not guilty-and the likes of Al Sharpton, who is still a bigot and race hustler...

They don’t consider Zimmerman to be Hispanic, thats where they are.

Agree. They don't connect with Zimmerman because of his name. That, and the media stuck the ridiculous 'white Hispanic' label on him from day one.

So it appears that those here who are saying “where are the Hispanics” in regards to running around carrying signs, etc-are missing the point we both made separately-most of us of Spanish descent identify as Americans first-one people, no racial/ethnic distinctions, and not down rolling in that racial mud-unlike some Americans apparently. Something is very wrong with this picture...

I looked at Zimmerman as a guy standing up where law enforcement could not...it was a gated community. Historically, when a community is walled and gated - those that do not belong should not be there. The fact that Martin either stopped and attack or came back to attack showed irresponsibility - Martin created the situation by being there. If you are doing nothing wrong - then why react in a violent manner - regardless of stereotypes - regardless past aggression (slavery) - regardless of anything. What ever happened - to a pleasant introduction? Martin could have approached Zimmerman and stated that he was using his community as a safe haven - cutting through - because it wasn’t safe to walk through another neighborhood and been sincere about it...but that’s not how it played out because of the people in Martin’s life - he was taught the response he used. It’s Zimmerman’s fault - it’s the fault of those that should have raised him correctly. Now the U.S. has been divided up into Black, Hispanic, White, White Hispanic, Asian, and any host of other cultures that will be identified as race - where it should be just the human race.

“Mexican is a nationality. Hispanic is a race, apparently, although I would not consider it so.”

You are correct that Mexican is a nationality, but you are incorrect that Hispanic is a race. Hispanic is a linguistic group (i.e., Spanish-language speakers). Hipanics comprise many different racial groups. The original Hispanics (i.e., those from the Iberian Peninsula) were causcasian.

To most Hispanics, Whites and other minorities, excluding American Blacks, George Zimmerman is just simply another American, which in fact, is exactly what he is!!! It is really American Blacks who keep themselves isolated from general American society...with great aid from their so-called leaders....who want to keep them chained to political and economic slavery!!!

You're right on this ... interesting and insightful...
