In U.S., 43% of Uninsured Unaware They Must Get Coverage [Or be fined (taxed)]
Gallup ^ | 06/28/2013 | Jeffrey M. Jones

Posted on 06/28/2013 8:25:52 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

The vast majority of Americans, 81%, say they are aware of the 2010 Affordable Care Act's (ACA's) requirement that most Americans must carry health insurance or pay a fine. Americans who are currently uninsured -- those most directly affected by this requirement -- are much less likely to be aware of the provision, with 56% saying they know about it and 43% saying they are unaware.

The results are based on a June 20-24 Gallup poll, which asked a series of questions on the ACA, the comprehensive healthcare reform bill signed into law by President Obama in 2010. Many of the law's key provisions will go into effect January 2014. Gallup previously reported that more Americans thought the law would make the healthcare situation worse than better for themselves and the nation.

The subgroups that are less likely to be aware of the health insurance requirement are also the subgroups that are least likely to be insured, including Hispanics, blacks, young adults, and those in lower-income households.

The federal government is ramping up its efforts to increase awareness among the uninsured to purchase health insurance. Those who lack insurance can find and purchase a plan for 2014 through a government website starting Oct. 1.

Three in Four Americans at Least Somewhat Familiar With the ACA

From a broader perspective, most Americans say they are at least somewhat familiar with the ACA as a whole -- with 16% saying they are very familiar with it and 59% saying they are somewhat familiar with it. Those who currently have insurance are more likely to say they are familiar with the law than those who are uninsured.

It’s the younger voters with decent jobs that are going to be surprised. They won’t be much better off than McDonald’s employees living in trailers and collecting food stamps and free health insurance.

“TAX” without requiring a re-write

IIRC, Roberts actually re-wrote the text himself.

RE: IIRC, Roberts actually re-wrote the text himself.

If true, he should be IMPEACHED for doing that. He has no constitutional authority to write laws for America.

The right thing to do would be to rule the Affordable Care act UNCONSTITUTIONAL as written and send it back to Congress for a re-write so that they can change all “fines” to “taxes”.

people are dumb on obamacare because the administration wanted them to be dumb before the reelection of The One.

all you heard about obamacare was the same constant mindless prattle about pre-existing 26 year olds, blah, blah, blah. then we, the people, struck dumb, lazy, and disinterested from successive generations of public school indoctrination, either bought it, or simply did not care.

the tombstone reads, “here lie our liberties, dead from lack of interest.”

Yes, 16,000 more “agents” hired for just that purpose.

Jails are not needed. Confiscation of all your assets, including your home, will be sufficient. They will bury you in a legal black hole. The government’s legal resources are infinite. Irony of course is that you are paying for the very lawyers that will destroy you.

Don’t kid yourself. They will do it.

Most Americans must enroll? So much for the equal protection that the government seems to use only when it works in the ruling elite’s favor.

If we must have the crap sandwich forced on us, then it should be forced on everyone even the ruling elite. Just maybe then there would be enough outrage to heat up some tar.

Ok, that’s just scary. Did you tell them about things like an IRS audit, fines, jails, etc??? Did they have any kind of reaction to the words “audit” and so forth? I get tired of people who are just this dumb that they think they can blow off paying their own bills. I remember sitting down with my father and learning how to do my own tax forms, after I graduated college....and I NEVER thought about NOT paying whatever I owed.

No that is not correct. The only thing the IRS can do is to withhold a refund if you have one.

I don’t believe they are going to fine everyone who doesn’t get insurance ... only certain people will be fined.

Exactly. Deep in the bowls of the IRS, there are coders who will develop algorithms that will output those in certain zip codes (and/or other parameters) that reference Conservatives.

I have no doubt that very few RATs will be getting fined.

Our government is insanely corrupt and accelerating its attack on Conservatives.

Payments of Penalties for Being Uninsured Under the Affordable Care Act
Congressional Budget Office
Excerpts:
That penalty will be the greater of: a flat dollar amount per person that rises to $695 in 2016...The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) and the staff of the Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT) have estimated that about 30 million nonelderly residents will be uninsured in 2016, but the majority of them will not be subject to the penalty tax...Others will be subject to the mandate but exempted from the penalty tax—for example, because they will have income low enough that they are not required to file an income tax return,...or because the premium they would have to pay would exceed a specified share of their income (initially 8 percent in 2014 and indexed over time). CBO and JCT estimate that between 18 million and 19 million uninsured people in 2016 will qualify for one or more of those exemptions. Of the remaining 11 million to 12 million uninsured people, some individuals will be granted exemptions from the penalty because of hardship,...In general, households with lower income will be subject to the flat dollar penalty (with adjustments to account for the lower penalty for children and an overall cap on family payments), and households with higher income will owe a percentage of their income. In 2016, households with income that exceeds 400 percent of the FPL are estimated to constitute about one-third of people paying penalties and to account for about two-thirds of the receipts from those penalties.

He's wrong. The IRS can do any damn thing it pleases, legal or not, and no one will do anything about it.

They may find out differently. They WILL run up against the wrong people. They WILL get what they deserve.

IRS: Cheapest Obamacare Plan Will Be $20,000 Per Family CNS News ^ | January 31, 2013 | Matt Cover
"In the examples, the IRS assumes that families of five who are uninsured would need to pay an average of $20,000 per year to purchase a Bronze plan in 2016...Using the conditions laid out in the regulations, the IRS calculates that a family earning $120,000 per year that did not buy insurance would need to pay a "penalty" (a word the IRS still uses despite the Supreme Court ruling that it is in fact a "tax") of $2,400 in 2016."

Let this be a lesson for an uninformed electorate: maybe now folks will actually learn about their candidates before voting for them.

Absolutely. That’s the problem with our system now, and we’re about to make it much worse.

People who have to pay for services, naturally minimize the services they use. If it’s perceived as the government paying, “Well, I better get my money’s worth!”
