Irish Lawmakers Expected to Approve Limited Abortion
The New York Times ^ | June 18, 2013 | DOUGLAS DALBY

The Irish Parliament is expected to legalize limited abortion before its summer break after the publication of final government proposals that would allow terminations in cases when there is a real and substantial risk to the life of the mother, including the threat of suicide.

In the face of intense opposition from the Roman Catholic Church and anti-abortion groups, Prime Minister Enda Kenny has pushed ahead with the changes while disallowing members of his party a free vote on conscience grounds. Given the large government majority in favor of the legislation, barring unforeseen circumstances it will pass into law.

The measure, called the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill 2013, would allow for an abortion when the life of the mother was threatened or if there was a possibility of suicide.

It also details the circumstances in which health professionals may carry out a termination. One doctor would be required in the case of a medical emergency, two when there is a physical threat to the life of the mother, and three — either an obstetrician or a gynecologist and two psychiatrists — when there may be a risk of suicide.

Ahead of publication of the proposed legislation last week, the Catholic Bishops issued a statement condemning it, saying that “no state has the right to undermine the right to life.” The church is calling on all Catholics, including political representatives, to oppose the bill, but has stopped short of threatening excommunication for those who

Curious that they would include risk of suicide as cause for abortion.

Here in the US, where Hillary Clinton assures us that abortion is "safe, legal, and rare," suicide rates for women who have had an abortion are 50% higher than the national average.

Wow. All they need to say is “let me kill my child or I will kill myself.”

Sad, and evil.

Also, there is some evidence that hormonal changes during pregnancy make women less likely to commit suicide. This from a pro-choice women's health site:

"Biological factors such as pregnancy may protect women against suicide; suicide rates in pregnant women are approximately half those of non-pregnant women."

And I thought St. Patrick had driven all the snakes out of Ireland - looks like he missed a few.

Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. (Isaiah 49:1 KJV)

Irish nationalism is hard Left. All the Irish nationalist parties and organizations are militantly atheist and anti-clerical.

“Including the threat of suicide” is enough to usher in abortion on demand.

Interesting argument when you factor in the fact that pregnant women are far less likely to commit suicide and women who have had an abortion are far more likely to do so.

Promoters of abortion aren’t interested in preventing suicide. They want to promote abortion. If the law says, “Threatening suicide will win you a free-abortion ticket,” then those who want abortions will threaten suicide.
