Daughter, 18, cuts off her father's head after he raped her in their Papua New Guinea village home
The Mail on Sunday ^ | June 16, 2013 | Richard Shears

Posted on 06/18/2013 8:02:35 PM PDT by Tolerance Sucks Rocks

A teenage girl chopped her father's head clean off with a bush knife after he raped her in their home in the highlands of Papua New Guinea.

Now residents of the village have formed a protective ring around the 18-year-old, refusing to hand her over to the police because they agreed her 'evil' father deserved to die.

A local church leader, Pastor Lucas Kumi from the village of Rang in the Western Highlands, said the entire community would refuse to allow the girl to be subjected to any official investigation.

'The people and leaders in our area went and saw the headless body of the father after the girl reported the incident to them and explained why she had killed her father,' said Pastor Kumi.

He told the Post Courier newspaper that the father, in his mid-40s, raped his daughter when they were alone in their house after the mother and two other children from the family went to visit relatives for the night.

'The father went to his daughter's room in the night and raped her repeatedly.

'The father wanted to rape his daughter again in the morning and that was when the young girl picked up the bush knife and chopped her father's head off,' said Pastor Kumi.

'We've all agreed that she is free to stay in the community because the father deserved to die.

'The daughter did what she did because of the trauma and the evil actions of her father, so that is why we have all agreed that she remains in the community.'

He said a ring of protection had been placed around the girl, who will be kept away from any official investigation.

'The community have also agreed not to conduct any formal burial service for the father.'

What does it tell us when tribal justice is superior to our current Western interpretation of “justice?”

If we have no problem letting the police get involved in murders or even serial killings I don’t see why sex crimes somehow should operate by different rules. Are all rape accusations always 100% truthful with no need to discover the whole picture?

When I was working in Namibia the wife of a local was raped. The guy chopped off the perp’s head an put it on a stick and walked around town. Everyone seemed to agree that the guy deserved it, but it wasn’t exactly legal, so the constable took him away...

Of course in Indonesia, not so far away, the young woman would be stoned to death. No four witnesses to rape? Must have been consensual then.

For a little perspective:
Another influential book by Mead was Sex and Temperament in Three Primitive Societies. This became a major cornerstone of the feminist movement, since it claimed that females are dominant in the Tchambuli (now spelled Chambri) Lake region of the Sepik basin of Papua New Guinea (in the western Pacific) without causing any special problems. The lack of male dominance may have been the result of the Australian administration's outlawing of warfare. According to contemporary research, males are dominant throughout Melanesia (although some believe that female witches have special powers). Others have argued that there is still much cultural variation throughout Melanesia, and especially in the large island of New Guinea. Moreover, anthropologists often overlook the significance of networks of political influence among females. The formal male-dominated institutions typical of some areas of high population density were not, for example, present in the same way in Oksapmin, West Sepik Province, a more sparsely populated area. Cultural patterns there were different from, say, Mt. Hagen. They were closer to those described by Mead.

In brief, her comparative study revealed a full range of contrasting gender roles:

The highlands of PNG were only opened to civilization in 1947, when an Australian bush pilot noticed villages. The climate is perfect: near the equator at 8,000 feet. The natives have been there for a few thousand years, having emigrated from southeast Asia.

The various tribes constantly fought, with continual bloodshed. Supposedly as a result of that, a tradition developed that the womenfolk would smother to death male babies to reduce the violent male plague. When a first census was taken, there were far more females than males. Surprise, surprise.

With this background, I am skeptical of the woman's story. This may be ancient tradition rearing its head.

I think your dates are off. Margaret Mead's book about the isolated tribes of PNG was years earlier than 1947. "Sex and Temperament in Three Primitive Societies (1935)"

"Growing Up in New Guinea" is a 1930 publication by Margaret Mead. The book is about her encounters with the indigenous people of the Manus Province of Papua New Guinea before they had been changed by missionaries and other western influences. She compares their views on family, marriage, sex, child rearing, and religious beliefs to those of westerners.

These are the highlands. No outsider was there until after the war and then only the Aussies. The Highlands are still the wild west, with widespread lawlessness and crime, in a beautiful environment.

Manus, where Mead was, is an island off the north coast of PNG. It is low-lying, hot and tropical.

There is also a continuing tradition of headhunting and cannibalism in the highlands. This is a deterrent to tourism. If you're willing to tolerate the locals, you can pick up a nice piece of land for next to nothing. There are no progressives up there.
