Jeb Bush: U.S. economy needs immigrants because they’re ‘more fertile’
Washington Post ^ | June 14, 2013 | Aaron Blake

Former Florida governor Jeb Bush (R) argued Wednesday that the United States should pass immigration reform because the U.S. economy needs the labor of young immigrants, and immigrants are “more fertile.”

“Immigrants create far more businesses than native-born Americans,” Bush said at the Faith and Freedom Coalition’s Road to the Majority conference. “Immigrants are more fertile, and they love families, and they have more intact families, and they bring a younger population. Immigrants create an engine of economic prosperity.”

Bush said immigrants are an advantage that the United States has over China, Europe and Japan, which don’t have the same immigrant tradition and are struggling to find young laborers.

“If we don’t do it, we will be in decline, because the productivity of this country is dependent upon young people that are equipped to be able to work hard,” Bush said.

Bush, whose wife is a Mexican-born immigrant, has long been an advocate for comprehensive immigration reform.

So, it’s OK for illegal Hispanic women to be barefoot and pregnant, eh, Jeb?

Brains mean more to productivity than brawn. It's so elementary. Jeb's not being sincere or he's just plain clueless.

Damn! You are a good sell. Do you work for the chamber of commerce or something? I'm almost ready to go but just not that adventurous.

It's like America was - people helping people. And those with no jobs or very little growing their own food which is hard work. Each generation always improving their status.

it is consider shameful to beg or look for handouts

I remember America being like that - or actually the people I was surrounded with were like that. And, anonymously, you would leave something by the door you knew they needed. Because hard times can fall on anyone and you never took for granted, but thankful, for what you had because your turn may be next.

At least, that is how I was raised. Outside our family/friends bubble it may have been different because it changed very quickly. I, also, think the credit card business had alot to do with it. 'Why wait - you can have it all now' mindset was born. Then we started picking up the tab for these types.

One last thing - you didn't mention any cons, they has to be cons.

And 500.00 a month ? A retiree's paradise. Are homes like we have here in the states? Big kitchens, bathrooms? A/C? And what the average home (the kind spoiled Americans are used to) cost?

I think I told myself, when Terri Schiavo was being starved, that, while I wish he would make some sweeping executive decision, that perhaps that isn’t the governor’s role...that it was the governor’s role to let the system work...but as I get older, I can’t think of any time that an executive action would have been more justified than that, or when babies are being dismembered right inside their mother’s wombs...

What a crock. As if Jeb Bush really cared about fertility. Why doesn’t he put his money where his mouth is and deport the mexicans and bring in 20 million chinese if fertility really is the issue here.

YOU probably can’t aceept that the USA is doomed and forever gone...

Wrong. I not only accepted it but I knew it in '08.

YOU are probably to scared to do what thousands before you did when their countries became evil, corrupt and bankrupt...

Wrong, again. My parents came from a country you listed. They met here where nationalities stuck together when they came over from the other side. So I don't come from 'scared' stock. Then came from farm life to city life with nothing but what they learned from home - how to survive.

US citizens are too lazy or chicken to do JUST that...

I consider myself neither. Just comfortable because I wasn't lazy.

Sell everything, pack a suitcase and start over where opportunity exists....

Opportunity for what?

USA forefathers were brave men and women...

I only have to look at what my father and mother did for that. And aunts and uncles. My father was from a family of 13 - 3 stayed and my mom from a family of 6. And one came with 7 children. All prospered nicely, no one lived on handouts ever.

The brave no longer

My family is brave - they aren't running away. Those who aren't brave are the politicians - who took an oath but it meant nothing to them.

Your country sounds like a nice place for a 2nd home but my family is here. And a nice place for a get away and have a different type of family reunion place that will be memorable.

Not what's that about earthquake? I knew there was a con.

The fertility comment can be taken as a borderline (p/t/p) racist remark ... Are we also supposed to admire such people b/c of their “superior” sexual prowess or “endowment” as ascribed to other ethnic groups?

When all you care about is numbers pulling the voting levers, civic responsibility apparently means squat.

There are no Polar Bears in Antarctica. However, they do have Killer Whales that find the penguins yummy. We need to introduce Jeb and friends to Shamu, the Killer Whale.

That’s easy to remedy. Stop using birth control. Next reason for passing immigration deform?

No, fertility doesn’t care, it is a state. When one conflates birthrate with fertility they end up arguing semantics...

As one of the definitions of fertility we do consider birthrate, but I would say that is a bastardization of the true intent of the word (a state or the ability to be fertilized / produce offspring).

Why consider birthrate as a sub-definition of fertility when birthrate perfectly well explains itself as does fertility? Like I said, it is a conflated term especially considering all of the other definitions speak directly to the ability to produce offspring or support food production as in soil.

fer·til·i·ty
[fer-til-i-tee] Show IPA
noun
1.
the state or quality of being fertile.
2.
Biology . the ability to produce offspring; power of reproduction: the amazing fertility of rabbits.
3.
the birthrate of a population.
4.
(of soil) the capacity to supply nutrients in proper amounts for plant growth when other factors are favorable.

So you’re quibbling with meaning 1 over meaning 3.

Both are legitimate uses of the word by your own source.

Well let's be very specific then, he said fertile, not fertility:

Definition of FERTILE

1 a : producing or bearing fruit in great quantities : productive

1 b : characterized by great resourcefulness of thought or imagination : inventive (a fertile mind)

1 c obsolete : plentiful

2 a (1) : capable of sustaining abundant plant growth (fertile soil) (2) : affording abundant possibilities for growth or development

2 b : capable of growing or developing

2 c (1) : capable of producing fruit (2) of an anther : containing pollen (3) : developing spores or spore-bearing organs

2 d : capable of breeding or reproducing

3: capable of being converted into fissionable material (fertile uranium 238) — fer·tile·ly adverb — fer·tile·ness noun

I made myself very clear as to why I thought birthrate was a conflation of the term fertility, so I really shouldn't need to explain that further.

“...“Immigrants are more fertile,...”

Yes they are - because their women haven’t been brainwashed into murdering their own offspring and calling it “choice”, and they understand the mathematics of population growth.
