I read the article. He seemed to be naïve in terms of his political leanings about Obama; so with Obama's snooping, he is disillusioned. What impressed me was that he chose not to sell the info for lots of money to other countries and he purposefully chose not to leak info that would do personal harm to someone. He was more interested in the harm the government's spying was doing to Americans.

I read the article and watched the interview. Occam’s Razor would indicate that he is no more nor less than he says he is. That he was the source for the WAPO and The Guardian indicates they were also convinced.
His remarks about government archiving all communications on everyone forever, with the ability to go back years in order to digitally reconstruct someones entire life is indeed chilling.
