Syria: Assad's rearmed and regrouped forces sense turn of the tide
The Guardian ^ | June 5, 2013 | Ian Black

Bullet-scarred and shattered buildings, eerily empty streets, makeshift hospitals, rumours of massacres and triumphant government soldiers riding around on tanks are all grimly familiar images after more than two years of Syria's bloody and escalating war.

Wednesday's scenes in the central town of Qusair, which was retaken by President Bashar al-Assad's forces after a two-week battle, certainly represent a significant defeat for the rebels, who are outgunned, divided among themselves and still uncertain of gaining wider international support.

It is too early to assess whether the tide has turned definitively in favour of the Assad regime, though Qusair is the latest in a string of victories. Most independent experts still believe there is little chance – an estimated 90,000 have already died since March 2011 – of an outright military victory by either side. But the president is likely to feel emboldened, and is prepared for a long haul.

It really is difficult deciding who to cheer for here.

I don’t understand the need to root for either side in this war. Both sides are evil.

WHY NOT GET EMBROILED IN THIS?

I mean, we have a full-blown Watergate on our hands, and apparently the general public DOES NOT CARE.

Why not add a VIETNAM to this Watergate...?

Ah, but no Saigon ho’s in this one, and no go-go boots and mini-skirts.

Assad is a despicable thug, but he’s the least worst option. A rise to power by yet another Muslim Brotherhood regime would be a disaster.

So... shove it up your ass, McCain.

I would arm Israel to the hilt, keep our troops out, warn Iran to F’off or get carpet bombed tell Europe and Persian Gulf states we don’t care about the oil from there anymore.

I think the best outcome would be to let them kill each other for decades.

IMHO...

Rebels work for globalist banksters, which are the biggest evil in the world.

Not to mention, other countries have no legitimate reason to topple Syria’s government.

But that hasn’t stopped the bankers for well over a century.

The bookmakers in Londen are setting odds of 7 to 2 that Assad will still be in power on 6/30/13

Place your betts........

I never though I could side with Syria and Assad, but after careful consideration I have to confess that he is the lesser of the two evils, if for no other reason than the people who are are pushing for his overthrow.

“It really is difficult deciding who to cheer for here.”

It’s not. There are MILLIONS of Christians that will be slaughtered if Assad falls. He protects them.

The Syria government is a terrorist group allied with Iran and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The Rebels are al Qaeda.

Support the weaker side and flip sides when necessary.

Christians are Assad’s second most important power bloc, behind his Alawaites. Particularly the Christian merchant class based in the major cities. If Assad losses they will be liquidated, no doubt. Perhaps that will sway you.

Not anywhere near millions, but one thing that can be said in favor of Assad is that he has protected the Christians, if for no other reason than to prevent them from joining any opposition to his regime.

While it is hard to find a dog in this fight, the fact of the matter is that the rebels have forced out the Christian populations of areas under their control, and have been guilty of massacres of Christians.

Wiki shows 2.5 Million Christians and I’m not sure if they’re counting the ones from Iraq that have been driven there by Iraq’s government - both countries had very large numbers of Christians (as did Egypt).

The only question left is what happens to them in Syria. They may be given a chance to leave, but if they stayed under the control of the terrorists...who knows what their fate would be.
