Connecticut Senate passes bill writing Wright Brothers out of history

Are they righting a wrong or wronging the Wrights?

The Connecticut Senate passed a bill Tuesday evening that would delete the Wright brothers from history, explicitly stripping recognition for the first powered flight from Orville and Wilbur and assigning it to someone else.

“The Governor shall proclaim a date certain in each year as Powered Flight Day to honor the first powered flight by [the Wright brothers] Gustave Whitehead and to commemorate the Connecticut aviation and aerospace industry,” reads House Bill No. 6671, which now sits on the governor’s desk awaiting passage into law.

"There’s no question that the Wright brothers retain their place in aviation history," Republican state sen. Mike McLachlan told FoxNews.com. And rightfully so. They just weren't first." The governor is likely to sign the bill as early as next week, he said.

In March, aviation historian John Brown unveiled what he calls photographic proof that Whitehead flew over Connecticut in 1901, “two years, four months, and three days before the Wright brothers.”

"At least in Connecticut, aviation history now appears to have been rewritten,” Brown told FoxNews.com Wednesday. “I have no information about whether school books will be reprinted in time for the start of Fall classes.”

Ohio has a stake in this too. Will they rename Wright State University? Will they reissue the Ohio quarter after removing the image of the Wright brothers’ plane?

Mohammed flew on a horse. Not the same.

BTW, why doesn’t Discovery, History, PBS, et al ever debunk THAT claim, oooh around the time of Ramadan, the way they always try to debunk Christmas and Easter origins around those holidays?

Didn’t someone else get to the patent office before AG Bell?

Edison was an insufferable prig! He paid boys to steal family’s pets, and electrocuted the pets to show how unsafe AC was. Even did in an elephant. He promised to pay Tesla for a job, then laughed at him when Tesla asked for the promised amount. Edison told him it was a joke, and that Tesla didn’t understand American humor!

You’re thinking of Trenton, the capital of Delaware.

Interesting that politicians can change history by legislation.

We aren’t talking about “recognizing the equality of races” or even “equality of all sexual preferences”. We are talking about the time/date/origins of an event.

What about leaving it to “consensus”?

No man's life, liberty or property are safe when the Legislature is in session. Now add to that list sanity.

There were many early flight pioneers, but the Wright's documented their flight and quickly developed controlled powered flight. Whitehead may or may not have flown before the Wright brothers, but one photo, now apparently lost, and no other good documentation of the feat doesn't give him much credibility.

Heard some pair on NPR trying to shake down podcasters for money for having podcasts. They claim that they invented it in the 1990s. Except they didn't have a working protype device (at least from what I heard in the interview). It was pre-ipod then. They fell back to using cassette tapes.

I thought you can't patent an idea, that the patent goes to the first WORKING prototype.

This pi$$ing match has been going on for eon's and I have been @ aviation get-togethers in CT where this was discussed.

But think controlled flight, if my memory was correct, Whitehead's aircraft was a kludge, no control, end of story.

The problem is now the CT legislator has confirmed the know as little about aviation as they do about firearms...
