WASHINGTON – A top IRS official in the division that reviews nonprofit groups will invoke the Fifth Amendment and refuse to answer questions before a House committee investigating the agency’s improper screening of conservative nonprofit groups.

Lois Lerner, the head of the exempt organizations division of the IRS, won’t answer questions about what she knew about the improper screening – or why she didn’t reveal it to Congress, according to a letter from her defense lawyer, William W. Taylor 3rd.

Lerner was scheduled to appear before the House Oversight committee Wednesday.

DOCUMENT: The Inspector General’s report on the IRS

“She has not committed any crime or made any misrepresentation but under the circumstances she has no choice but to take this course,” said a letter by Taylor to committee Chairman Darrell E. Issa, R-Calif. The letter, sent Monday, was obtained Tuesday by the Los Angeles Times.

You’re right. I need to look back at the timeline, since both of them have been in charge of the tax exempt organizations component.

Republicans - here's your 2014 campaign basis.

Lerner: "I refuse to answer your question on the grounds it may incriminate me ..."

Over and over again - ads, videos, mention by every Republican on every program ...

But I fear the republicans are pussies - afraid they will be accused of "overreaching."

One of Congressional Dems favorite moves when in power is to grant immunity to witnesses to get at a bigger fish. That essentially destroys any chance of criminal prosecution. (didn’t Fawn Hall get immunity?)

If Issa can convince Boehner to turn up the heat on demanding a special counsel, they can work a deal with this gal to find out who up the chain concocted the planted question strategy.

Is this what the WH aides are panicked over? It’s like checkmate in chess - when the realization hits that there’s no way out.

Keep an eye on Ft. Marcy Park or space alien abductions.

Grand jury time! There is no 5th in a Grand Jury.

Go with grand jury and a special prosecutor.

republicans ARE wussies - which is why we have to elect conservatives and Tea Partiers.

Make people choose sides in the ads.

The IRS loser taking the 5th? Or the patriotic hard working tax payer?

It really should be a no-brainer.......right?

Put the bit$& under oath in front of a committee and make her recite the
Fifth over and over. Period! If she has not committed any crime why would she
take the Fifth? We all know the answer.

I don’t like the idea of immunity either, but if she can catch a bigger fish, it might be worth it.

Well. I’d say that’s a tacit admission of guilt, and a sure indicator of a cover-up that goes all the way to the top.

This will only intensify the digging. Get out the backhoes!!

Agree! Put her under oath. Let the questions begin and the camera’s roll.
Record every fifth she takes!
