Florida girl, 18, arrested and expelled after relationship with 15-year-old female classmate

An 18-year-old Florida student’s senior year has become a nightmare — all because she was in a same-sex relationship with a 15-year-old, her family says.

Kaitlyn Hunt was arrested Feb. 16 for having a physical relationship with a younger classmate, who was her girlfriend at the time, mom Kelley Hunt Smith wrote on Facebook.

Under Florida law, Hunt could see up to 15 years in prison and must register as a sex offender. A plea deal, however, remains on the table that would give Hunt two years' house arrest and one year of probation, her family said.

“Does my daughter deserve to lose her life for 15 years, or 3 years, or to have no life, because of one choice she made in high school, absolutely not!!” Hunt Smith wrote Friday, adding, “This is a mother’s nightmare.”

The distraught mom and her family has launched an online campaign asking supporters to petition the State Attorney’s office in Indian River County and have them reconsider the charges.

“The (assistant) state attorney, Brian Workman needs to use taxpayers money to prosecute REAL criminals, not a high school student who has never been in trouble a day in her young life, all because she had a mutual consenting relationship with someone who has bigoted parents,” wrote Hunt Smith, who didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment Sunday.

Hunt’s uncle, Andrew Gay, told the Daily News that the girls were in the same social circle at Sebastian River High School and played together on the basketball team.

In September, after Hunt turned 18, she and the other girl, a freshman, began dating and expressed their relationship in “intimate ways,” the family said.

But when the basketball coach found out about their relationship, Hunt was thrown off the team and the other girl’s parents were notified.

The parents then told police, and a phone call was recorded between their daughter and Hunt in which the girls discussed their relationship, Gay said.

The age of consent in Florida is 18.

Hunt was arrested on two counts of felony lewd and lascivious battery on a child ages 12 to 16, jail records show.

Her family was devastated.

“We certainly aren’t saying that all 18-year olds anywhere should be able to date all 15-year olds,” Gay said. “But this is a situation where these two girls were in the same social circle, on the same basketball team. I just don’t think Kaitlyn looked at this girl and thought, 'She’s a certain age, so she’s off limits to me.'”

Hunt Smith claims the other family was upset because their daughter was in a same-sex relationship and believed that Hunt had somehow “made” their daughter gay.

“Of course I see it 100% different,” Hunt Smith wrote. “I don’t see or label these girls as gay. They are teenagers in high school experimenting with their sexuality, all teens do it in one form or another. ... And even if their daughter is gay, who cares, she is still their daughter.”

Hunt was expelled from the high school and agreed to have no contact with the other girl. She also transferred to an alternative high school.

Although she’ll be allowed to walk with the graduating class at Sebastian River High School, her final year — and future — has been tainted by scandal.

“Should the girls have made better choices, YES. I agree," Hunt Smith said, "but is this criminal, no."

The State Attorney’s Office in Indian River County couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

Regardless of whether the family takes the plea, Gay said, a felony child abuse charge will ruin his niece’s future and her dream of one day becoming a nurse.

“She’s been a great student, so bright and not troubled at all,” Gay said. “She was voted ‘most school spirit.’ What’s happened to her now is ridiculous.”

A Florida could lower the age of consent like what happens in other states.. or B the parents should of told their kid what the law was... or C both of the above.

In light of Florida not changing the law I’m going to go with option B.

The fact that they never had sex AT ALL before her 18th birthday (or presumably the day immediately after) doesn't change the idiocy of the law that it would be legal one day, and illegal the next day.

The law is full of idiocy and arbitrary lines. If you steal a $499 suit in IL, it's a misdemeanor, while a $500 suit is a felony. Both are wrong, but one carries a significant penalty.

It is wrong for a 17 y/o about to turn 18 to have sex with a 15 y/o, but the legislatures have drawn the felony line at the birthday - the same line they drew for other adult responsibilities and consequences. As a parent, I would react adversely to a 17 y/o bedding my 15 y/o daughter. I would also react adversely a day later on the little rat's 18th birthday, with one more arrow in my quiver, thanks to the law.

I posted a similar article from The Blaze earlier today. My take is this: What we have here is a girl who thinks age of consent laws shouldn't apply to her because she is a lesbian.

And I will add her mommy's Facebook post shows when it comes to moral vacuity, the apple didn't fall too far from the tree.

There is a Facebook group called "Free Kate." It was an open group earlier today, but now it is closed (I wonder why.). There is also an online petition at Change.org that's dying to be Freeped. Finally, I feel it is my duty to inform you the user allmendream is no more. He was given the ZOT by Jim Robinson earlier today.

Very true.

All the mothers of sons I know, had to have the “conversation” about the legal age of sexual consent.
All the mothers of daughters I know, had a similar conversation.

Most of the mothers I know included lot’s of facts, lot’s of morals, and plenty of real world consequences.

Yes, the 18 year old is guilty of a sex crime.
Her mother should have taught her better...

Her mother thinks of the parents of the 15-year-old (they are the ones who filed charges) as, "Bigoted, religious zealots" because they had the unmitigated gall to move to protect their daughter.

It’s a stupid law. 15 year girls are not much less mature than 18 year old females. I’d spot 5 years after the age of 15.

Because MANY of the women throughout history were ‘under age’ when they got married.

But they were married, not engaging in relations outside of marriage.

Your original post seemed to indicate that you believed that the 18 year old was a male.

And for the record I do believe the law should be applied equally.

I also believe that if enough people convince the legislature to change the law, then that law should be applied equally.

“Should the girls have made better choices, YES. I agree,” Hunt Smith said, “but is this criminal, no.”

Welcome to the world of Big Government, Mr. Smith.

Democrats decided to allow AgencyPersons to decide when a minor could have sex - a decision once largely left to the parents.

Surprise, Surprise, SURPRISE! AgencyPersons and their laws/regulations make a poor substitute for parental judgment.

Turns out there was a reason the Constitution didn’t allow government to raise children.

PS Nathaniel Grigsby ID’ed the Democratic Party as “this party of treason” back in the 19th century. They are the same now.

” The questions that need to be asked are “Why was this law created in the first place?””

Make work for a swarm of Democrats.

“to stop pervs from preying on minors”

I wish you were correct, but I am doubtful. ‘Crats care first for their agency, and their place in said agency. Client welfare is a distant second.

I must note that to send one’s children to the Pooblik Screwl Collective where they are age segregated from kindergarten on is a bad idea. Specifically, it is the old Prussian school system, with an admixture of communism.

Democrats love kids having sex, you would have to be blind to miss that.

I am so glad I will never be as blind as a libertopian

Dear, God. While I would discourage this relationship to make it criminal is a crime. It’s private, the age difference is too small, with both in high school. Those school officials need to get a life.

Yes, but the age aspect is what I was getting at. In the early 1900s and prior a 14-15 yo getting married/having kids was common. My Grandmother was such. Today Gramps would be a pedo. Many Freepers here are in the same boat. As are many older Americans. Our parents/GP were all married very young. And that’s the problem. For thousands of years it was one way, then in the past 50 suddenly on someone’s say so, all that history is now ‘wrong’. It’s not just OK because of marriage. The ages IMO are the core issue. Pedo is pedo married or not.

Someone raised the point on another thread that back in the 1700's and up until the industrial revolution that early marriage was common due tot he fact taht people matured faster becasue of the need to survive. Our counties history is replete with stories of pioneers that were married at 14-15 years old and moving out west.

My Great Grandfather came to this country at age 16 by himself.

Marriage is totally different from illicit sex, what to speak of same sex sodomy. IMHO the trend and push towards later in life marrying is not a good thing at all.

Another ‘inconvenient truth’ that a lot of conservatives don’t like to talk about because of the ick factor is that puberty, the biological fact of it, is at odds with the whole must be 18 yo for sex thing.

Nature and society’s ideas of when the sex is A OK are two very different things. And natures version of ready puts it squarely into society’s definition of pedo. The problem REALLY comes in the discussion. Because it is all but impossible to have a straight discussion of it without someone screaming YOU SUPPORT PEDOPHILIA!
