The myth of green Australia

Having collected the Nobel peace prize in 2007, Al Gore's fortunes as a climate crusader slid into the doldrums. But 8th November 2011 arrived as a ray of sunshine. On that day Australia's parliament passed into law the world's first economy-wide carbon tax. Rushing to his blog, Gore posted a short but rapturous statement, cross-posted in The Huffington Post. His fervent language echoed in progressive circles across the globe. Australians have been held-up as pioneering environmentalists ever since, putting Americans to shame.

"This is a historic moment", thundered Gore. "With this vote", he blogged, "the world … turned a pivotal corner in the collective effort to solve the climate crisis". He proclaimed it "the result of tireless work of an unprecedented coalition that came together to support the legislation"; he praised the "leadership of Prime Minister [Julia] Gillard and the courage of legislators"; and he declared "the voice of the people of Australia has rung loud and clear".

But maybe Gore's enthusiasm was a bit misplaced. In September, less than two years later, Australians seem likely, according to the polls, to hand the Gillard Labor government a stinging landslide defeat.

[...]

As it turns out, and not for the first time, Gore's analysis was wrong.

Well actually she campaigned on "There will be no carbon tax under the government I lead"

Post election, coming behind the comservative Opposition (who didn;t want a Carbon Tax either) on votes, she retained office with Green Party support by caving to their demands.

You are correct Oztrich boy - also seeing their power bills almost double hasn’t helped!

I look forward to September 14. It’s not Election Day, it’s Clean Up Australia Day.

A lot of people speak of waiting with baseball bats for this government. Me, I’ve been hammering nails into mine since ‘07.

The latest Newspoll of 5-7 April 2013 has Gillard’s satisfaction rating at a dismal 28 per cent, with 62 per cent dissatisfied.

Labor’s support is still in the basement at 32 per cent, with the Liberal-Nationals at 48 per cent. Likely, the government faces a devastating loss of around 20 seats.

That sounds GOOD!

Your elite particularly at universities have been pushing the carbon guilt meme for big money. It’s incredible that a complete moron like Tim Flannery would be given so much power. They are parasites and it’s going to be hard to dislodge them.

I hear some kid was a victim of an exploding golf ball prank down in Oz, lost some fingers.

First thing I though of was an image of the Won on the green, tees off and then you are looking from a distance and see this miniature nuke mushroom cloud.

I spent five weeks in AUS the year after they passed that tax.

My hotel was on the water next to a row of $2-3M dockside condos. Every single one of them had laundry drying outside; it was too expensive to own and run a clothes dryer.

What I really enjoyed was paying the equivalent of $6.50 for a gallon of gas, as well as a 250-300 increase in the cost of ANYTHING that involved coal or oil in its production or transport. The hit was especially bad when it came to food; $50 for breakfast, $70-100 for lunch, $150 for dinner... and that’s for a normal-sized portion of non-extravagant food for two people.

“Currently, the tax and its post-2015 form as an emissions trading scheme (ETS) are adjusted for a trivial 5 per cent cut from 2000 levels in 2020; 5 percent of 1.5 percent of the world’s emissions barely registers against a few days increase in countries like China.”

This is a point that I try my best to make. We (the US) are about 15 times the size of Australia in population. So while they kill themselves only to delay bumping up world emissions by a few days - we are killing ourselves to delay bumping up world emissions by a month or two - but THAT IS IT. Unless China, India, and many, many, other countries play ball - then all our efforts are in vain.

And the LIBERALS KNOW THIS. They are not dumb. They can go to Wikipedia just like I can and find out who is the biggest carbon ‘polluter’ today (i.e., China), and who is increasing an order of magnitude faster than the entire Western World (i.e., China).

They KNOW all this - but their PRIMARY GOAL is to shut down our economy and bring us down a few notches (i.e., to a standard of living closer to Mexico’s...although they’re improving these days). So people can laugh at me for stating what I’ve stated all they want, but I’m still waiting for a better explanation of why they’re doing what they’re doing.

Great article. Thanks for posting it. For the first time, I have read an explanation of why she went back on her campaign promise. She didn’t have the courage to back down the bluff of the greens. In George H. W. Bush fashion, she said, “Read my lips. No carbon taxes.” And like Bush, she caved.

So, the idea that Australians supported this carbon tax scam was just false. As usual, politicians will make a deal with the devil if it means they can stay in power.
