Skip to comments.Law would stop Tesla electric car sales in NC

To date, 80 North Carolina residents have squeezed their savings for the bragging right of owning the Tesla Model S electric car, some paying more than $100,000 for their g-force ride, but they may be among the last.
A legislative proposal, backed by the N.C. Automobile Dealers Association, would make it illegal for Tesla, or any other car maker, to bypass dealerships and sell directly in the state. The proposal cuts at the heart of Teslas business model: selling luxury cars over the phone or Internet and then delivering them to the front door of high-net-worth customers.
The whole misunderstanding would go away, the dealers say, if Tesla sold its cars through licensed dealerships. OConnell countered, in essence, that displaying a Tesla in a showroom of subcompacts and SUVs would be akin to selling Dom Perignon in the food court at the local mall.

if this was true, they’d outlaw private sales, for our “protection”.
For these same reasons, in many states, you can’t buy a hearing aid, crutches, walkers, or wheelchairs unless properly “dispensed”.
What a stupid law. Anyone that wants one could just take delivery across the nearest boarder, couldn’t they?
Its like buying a casket in most of America. Its illegal to do without going through a high priced funeral director.
You can buy one anywhere without any problem ... google mail order caskets or just goto http://www.walmart.com/ip/Executive-Privilege-Steel-Casket/12568640 ,, about 20 years ago a federal law was passed to stop funeral home abuses ... no funeral home can stop you from supplying your own casket and cannot jack up prices on other items to punish you if you do.
No fair minded conservative could support this bill.
That is putting it politely. The word for it is corruption. Is it a Dem or GOP controlled legislature?
It looks really nice. I agree with you.
This law is unconstitutional. Regulation of interstate commerce is the province of the federal government, not individual states.
It’s fascism. Classic use of government by the entrenched to destroy their competition.
SC is wrong in this.
“Its like buying a casket in most of America. Its illegal to do without going through a high priced funeral director.”
Well, duh, of course it is. There are huge safety issues to take into account.
Obama and Clinton found four nice Caskets when the Benghazi Murder Victims showed up for the White House Photo Op.
Is there a Costco in Tripoli?
GOP for the first time in 140 years.
Does Tesla avoid sales tax by selling over the internet? Is that what this is about?
SC is wrong in this.
Not at all, it is NC doing it, not SC.
OOPS sorry SC :)
North Carolina demands that your burger be cooked to 160 degrees, for your own good. Why would another stupid rule be surprising?
I saw one yesterday leaving Eureka
It is a nice looking ride. If I had a lot of money and was looking for an electric car it would probably be a Tesla.
it just goes to show they are all corrupt. You would think that after getting control for the first time in one hundred and forty years that they would not do something like this.
GOP as bad as DEMS in that sense. Make no mistake that the biggest problem in government is this kind of corruption. This GOP controlled legislature should be ashamed but instead the are crooks compromising the public’s interest. In my book that makes them the lowest form of scum.
