Neighbor 'goes nuts,' destroys several homes with bulldozer (Washington State)

PORT ANGELES, Wash. -- Witnesses say a man upset with his neighbors went on a rampage with a bulldozer-like piece of logging machinery in a Port Angeles neighborhood, damaging four homes and knocking out power to thousands of people.

The Clallam County Sheriff's Office says it does not appear that anyone was injured during the incident that happened just after noon Friday along Pioneer Road. The suspect was arrested.

"A person with a piece of heavy equipment that was very upset, struck (four) homes in the area and also a truck," said Jim Borte with the Clallam County Sheriff's Department.

Keith Haynes lives near one of the damaged homes and told the Peninsula Daily News the man took a piece of logging equipment called a skidder and "just went nuts."

Haynes said a woman inside one of the homes escaped unharmed, and the other home was unoccupied. Haynes said the houses were demolished.

Haynes said a new Ford truck also was damaged in the incident.

“It was like a war zone,” Haynes, a former law enforcement officer who has lived in that neighborhood for two years, told the paper.

It is a beautiful place, but more importantly, its actually safer than most places these days. Both of our children and 5 of our grandchildren were born here.

If he did it because of rap music, I don’t care. Turn him loose, and I’ll buy him another tank of diesel.

My grandfather was born there also. He ran a pack train up to hurricane ridge from Heart O The Hills.

Here’s a fun tidbit for you. It is possible that at some point, your grandfather may have been by or at my house.

I live on a mountain east of Port Angeles. Our house (the main house) was built in the late 1800s. It had been a livery stable, a blacksmith shop and a dairy. It was a post office between 1906 and 1911. After the local school burned down, our house became a schoolhouse for a time. It’s been many things over the years and served many generations as a home.

If I look to the west, I can see Hurricane Ridge. To the east I see the Dungeness spit and the old lighthouse. Looking north the view is of the Juan de Fuca Straight, Victoria B.C. about 19 miles across the water, and the entrance to the San Juan Islands. South of me is part of the north side the Olympic Mountain range.

While some things have changed, some have not, so I am likely looking at some of the same beauty that your parent and grandparents enjoyed. The mountain air where I live is still mixed with sea air.

Cheers....

A neighbor and good friend passed away about 5 years ago. Louie Thie was 96 years old. He fought in WWII but other than that, he lived his entire life here and most of it a 1/2 mile above me on my mountain.

They made men strong back then. At 86, Luie lost a foot because of diabetes, yet that man continued to cut, baled and bring in his own hay up to about a year before his death. That man was a walking history book and if he were alive today, he would likely remember your relatives... it was a small population around here back then.

I haven’t been over to Port Angeles for several years. Do they still do that sand sculpture contest in the summer? It was during one of the times the Coho was out of service and Arrow was running a passenger boat to Victoria. I knew a couple of guys who worked for Arrow Services. Coho was in dry dock here in Anacortes recently.
