Cleveland’s Castro brothers ignore taunts during first night in jail

The nasty taunts of fellow inmates didn’t stop the Castro brothers from sleeping like babies.

The notorious siblings suspected of holding three young women hostage for a decade in a Cleveland home were housed Wednesday in separate cells — where they brushed off jailhouse insults.

“They seem relaxed,” said a guard at the Central Prison Unit at the Cleveland Police Headquarters. “Mostly they’ve just been sleeping with their heads under the pillows like they don’t want to be bothered.”

A fellow inmate said Ariel Castro, 52, owner of the house where the women were held in chains and ropes, was the target of vitriol from other prisoners.

“They were screaming at him all night,” said the 20-year-old ex-prisoner after his release. “He was just laying there, taking it. They were saying, ‘Don’t feed that rapist! He doesn't deserve any respect!’”

It may very well be a ploy to use the prelimary charge(s) to detain them, and buy the prosecution time to sift through the evidence in the case to ensure they all go down. Just a hunch.

I wouldn’t bet on that. How many of the prisoners are there for non-violent violations, for instance?

> “Word is just in that the two brothers won’t be prosecuted; there’s no evidence against them.”

Yes, those who are suggesting that all kinds of horrible things should be done to all three brothers should note that. Apparently the girls themselves have not accused the brothers of the house’s owner of having participated in the kidnappings or rapes. If the prisoners in the jail had had their way, by now all three brothers would probably be dead (which shows why it’s not such a good idea to turn the administration of justice over to criminals — duh).

I can hardly believe those women are still sane enough to talk, let alone function in some minimal way. Incredible.

I wouldn’t be against some voluntary program by which people’s homes could be toured by some objective observer and certified sex-slave-free. Then they could display some sort of sign. Those without a sign would experience social scrutiny.

This is just a jail, it’s like a ‘sleep over’ with a bunch of other lowlifes. Jail is nothing compared to what they will be introduced to in prison. Within a month in a real prison, these bugs won’t be able to hear their own farts.

In their minds, they are way, way ahead. They got away with it. They had sex slaves for years. The state won't execute them. They'll have three hots and a cot until they die, reliving their fondest memories of raping the innocent.

Respectfully submitted, Matt, but not even close.

You've probably never been to jail; I have. 45 days one time, 60 another. There is NOTHING to do in jail. Cards get old quick, so does chess. Time drags. A day seems like a week. That's when you are in the 'population'.

These guys won't be in General Population. They will be in solitary (Protective Custody). There is even LESS to do there. You are not even allowed a pen or paper. There is NO one to even talk to. You can actually feel yourself getting more stupid, as the mental stimulii is not there any more. I've never been in PC, but I've spoken to those that have, and they say if a day feels like a week in GP, a day feels like a year in PC.

IF they manage to escape a prison shanking (a big if) their lives will totally suck.

Don’t push for the death penalty (if Ohio has one), just let them loose into the general prison population in any Ohio penitentiary :) Remember The Shawshank Redemtion ?

The two brothers of Ariel Castro have been absolved of any connection to their one brother’s actions. They were not involved, according to the police, after intensive grilling and info from elsewhere. So two of the three brothers could indeed sleep peacefully, Their brother Ariel, not so much...

Johnny many here at FR seem to think that instead of the state taking a role and makeing a courageous decison to execute, that the prisoners should torture a prisoner to death.

Cowards.

The death penalty isn’t harsh enough for these monsters.

Part of it is a frustration with a system that takes years for death row inmates to get executed, if ever.

They had ought to be worried about getting the Jeffrey Dahmer treatment. If the state is smart about it, they are going to keep these guys far, far away from the other inmates.

Budget cuts - that might not be feasible, not that I mind. Generally, I think we have a moral responsibility to keep prisoners safe behind bars, but when the laws don't allow for an appropriate penalty, I'm okay with ordinary decent criminals solving the problem for society.

It is frustrating but the answer is to fight for the death penality, not torture people.

I have no trouble executing the Castros by flamethrower.
After a fair trial, of course...... we are not savages.

A flamethrower execution is civilized---a humane
punishment for years of savagery inflicted on three girls.

The Cleveland police are beneath contempt---going to the horror house---walking away---then conveniently "losing" the call records to cover their incompetent ***es.

Worst of all was the Asst prosecutor---the audacity to subvert justice to pump his heinous ethnic solidarity agenda. ....

The Asst prosecutor used the press conference to proselytize---to announce he, too, was a Puerto Rican (like the monstrous Castro family).

The barely literate imbecile actually insisted we should not paint all latinos as criminal.

The dumbo failed to realize HE was the problem-- forcing on the public his ethnic solidarity poison at a time when the nation hungered for justice for these horrific crimes.

The guy infected the discourse on justice for three brutalized girls. They should show him to the door and kick him out.

Probably Castro got away with his brutality for so long b/c of ethnic solidarity.
