Memo to the South: Go Ahead, Secede Already!
The Daily Beast ^ | April 30, 2013 | Lee Siegel

Posted on 04/30/2013 7:00:36 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Let’s face it—on nearly every important issue, from gun control to immigration to gay marriage, red states are holding America back. Lee Siegel on why the South should get the hell out of the union.

Let’s not be fooled by all the bipartisan rhetoric that has been streaming out of the GOP since Romney’s self-destruction. Hundreds of thousands of petitioners in a handful of red states still want to secede? Well, don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

A solid block of Southern states continues to refuse to expand Medicaid, thus squashing one of the linchpins of the president’s health-care reform. The South will likely be the last and most stubborn battleground in the fight for gay marriage. Gun control? The more the two sides seem to get cozier with each other, the faster gun-control legislation gets watered down—and more and more red states are passing laws making it legal to carry a concealed weapon. As for immigration, the red states seem to be relaxing their anti-immigrant fervor, but nothing approaching new legislation is even on the horizon.

The sad truth is that “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” can only be achieved at this point if the nation is split in half. Far from being fanciful or fanatical, the proponents of secession have a stronger grasp of political reality than just about anyone else. In fact, there are serious reasons why the North itself should take the lead in a secessionist movement.

Just think what America would look like without its mostly Southern states. (We could retain “America”: they could call themselves “Smith & Wesson” or “Coca-Cola” or something like that.) Universal health care. No guns. Strong unions. A humane minimum wage....

No - first we secede, then we give all the libs a reasonable 72 hours to vacate to blues states.

Well, I for one am sick of the way things are done against the Constitution. I'm sure 72 hours would be a reasonable time for most libs, but you they are slow in reasoning.

It would take something really bad before this would even be possible. If it did—like the confiscation of all private firearms and all privately held gold—Texas would be the first to go—followed by the states closest to her. A new CSA —now the Constitutional States of America would form. With Dallas as the Capital. Other states would leave as well, Alaska would become a Republic with Russian support, Hawaii would become a Kingdom again and Independent. Next would come CW II . and that would be the end of USA as a great power. Let Russia and China have a go at running things for a while.

Sure, we’d be happy too. May we take the Western States, excluding California, with us?

Actually, I think the breakup of the US is a normal part of its evolution. And the same goes for every other large country presently extant.

The time of giant nation-states is over.

The concept is hardly original to me. Jefferson even wrote about it; I haven’t been able to find the reference for this, though. I’m not an early-American specialist.

The latter would probably be a good rule of thumb. In reality it’d probably be the the 3 Left Coast States and the NE that’d stay in the union.

Sure. Love to.
Unfortunately, the last time we tried it didn’t work so well. Seems the Federales got this image of grass growing in the streets of New York and Boston did a really nasty “backsie” on us.
You get that cleared up and we’re gone.

agree, lets those white ever so loving diversity states like MA, RI, VT, CT have all the diversity by us sending them most of the black and illegal population, let them deal with how much of the black population is fat and on welfare, let their states pay for that.
They can take their homosexuals too seeing as they love them s much.

Lets face it seeing as they ever so much want their socialist utopia then let them have it too and leave us the hell alone.

Let them have Govt, illegals, welfare blacks, crime, public schools infested with non speaking English, gangs, drugs, illegals, etc.debt, new laws, hell now 15 year old girls can take a pill to kill a baby because she was dopey enough and showed no respect for herself by having sex but you have to show ID to get Dayquil or 18 is the law for sex, 16 for smoking.

Damn right I would want it

The liberals can all move to the north east.....and leave the rest of us alone.

Better yet, if they wish to live like socialist eurotrash, I suggest they find an appropriate nation and emigrate.

We live in two countries anyway and anyone from the south going north to the north east will tell you that you might as well be in another country and the attitude, expenses, prices, cost of living, social issues etc are very different to us down here...

Having lived in both Red England and the south, I can assure all that the differences you cite are spot on...the two regions have very little in common.

I was only kidding, but yeah, they're slow in reasoning. I'm afraid they wouldn't be given ten minutes to figure things out if the red states seceded.

If our political union truly were to split left and right, those stuck behind enemy lines would have an awful, and possibly even deadly experience. The smart ones would see it coming, and get out while the getting was good, although libs trapped in red states would eventually discover what good fortune that was.

A divided America will no longer be a superpower.

I thought Osama Bin Laden said he would 'divide America down the middle' (within a decade) not too long after 9/11. It may be along idealogical lines, but it seems to be working.

Screw them , let them leave and take their carpet bagging locusts who moved down here too

A lack of funds.

That's an all too common barrier to escape these days, but a person's motivation level has a lot to do with it too. If you perceive the threat is great enough, you'll find a way to move to safety.

As an example; during the Great Depression, both of my grandfathers loaded their wives and kids into their jalopies and headed to California to find work. They were men of almost no means at the time, but conditions were so dire in the Deep South, that they were motivated to overcome barriers you and I would consider insurmountable, to get their families out of there.

When my wife and I decided to uproot ourselves from California, we were sufficiently motivated to figure out a way to do it on just the money that was coming in from paychecks. I look back and still can't believe we pulled it off, but we wanted out that badly.

The writer is an idiot (but then again he is liberal).....I am happily moving myself to the South because the liberal cess pool I live in has become intolerable

Same here: I've had it. I'll be heading South in about 18 months and I can't wait. America today is two parties, grown apart over time, now facing irreconcilable differences. I'll miss this state, but I won't miss the idiots who've ruined it.
