Memo to the South: Go Ahead, Secede Already!
The Daily Beast ^ | April 30, 2013 | Lee Siegel

Posted on 04/30/2013 7:00:36 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Let’s face it—on nearly every important issue, from gun control to immigration to gay marriage, red states are holding America back. Lee Siegel on why the South should get the hell out of the union.

Let’s not be fooled by all the bipartisan rhetoric that has been streaming out of the GOP since Romney’s self-destruction. Hundreds of thousands of petitioners in a handful of red states still want to secede? Well, don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

A solid block of Southern states continues to refuse to expand Medicaid, thus squashing one of the linchpins of the president’s health-care reform. The South will likely be the last and most stubborn battleground in the fight for gay marriage. Gun control? The more the two sides seem to get cozier with each other, the faster gun-control legislation gets watered down—and more and more red states are passing laws making it legal to carry a concealed weapon. As for immigration, the red states seem to be relaxing their anti-immigrant fervor, but nothing approaching new legislation is even on the horizon.

The sad truth is that “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” can only be achieved at this point if the nation is split in half. Far from being fanciful or fanatical, the proponents of secession have a stronger grasp of political reality than just about anyone else. In fact, there are serious reasons why the North itself should take the lead in a secessionist movement.

Just think what America would look like without its mostly Southern states. (We could retain “America”: they could call themselves “Smith & Wesson” or “Coca-Cola” or something like that.) Universal health care. No guns. Strong unions. A humane minimum wage....

Yes, Utopia, their socialist heaven would resemble Greece in no time.

The real separation should be done between cities and the rest of the state. That is where the real dividing lines are.

They could keep the name "America" and the newly-seceeded area could be named ... "Galt's Gulch". :)

Great idea!

Load of misdirectional nonsense.

"Secession" has already occurred. The "South" does not have to do anything - the cities, counties and even entire states that no longer observe nor govern under the Constitution & the Bill of Rights have left the Union in their own way. The breakup of the United States is already in motion - has been for some time, right in front of us.

I’ve been saying for ten years, this is our only hope. We’ve tried the ballot box and the jury box. It’s over.

I understand Austin, but what’s wrong with DFW? I live in Denton and to me, it’s the greatest place to live in the US.

Agree, 2DV! I’m in Grapevine. Born and raised in Dallas in much different times in the ‘40s-’50s.

Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, Houston and the border cities in the Rio Grande Valley have turned blue. I think Fort Worth is NOT blue, but has just caved to the gay movement; based on what I see on local news. Creepy!

It is personal opinion the Mason-Dixon is a state of mind

Welcome to you as a new poster to FR.

I've never considered Maryland to be part of the Confederacy below the Mason-Dixon line back in those days; nor the Northern portions of Virginia.

Admittedly, I'm just spouting without doing further research. ....My opinion is probably driven by the liberalism that exists in those areas.

So long as it involves a good strong border fence and a no-man’s land(mines) besides, I say let’s do it. Hell, let’s hand out a crisp new Benjamin to each carload of Yankies desperate to return to the northern paradise they created.

I couldn’t believe this crazy op-ed, thought at first it was satire. But it’s actually a great idear.

The problem Red has in Red vs Blue hostilities is armor. Red is going to lack armored vehicles for a while as they are mostly all made in Ohio. On the other hand Red will be on par in aviation assets from the get go. Navy? Tilt toward Red if they can keep Newport News...

The south will not secede...... The better course is to purge.

The Neo Europa existing from New York, north and east will be thrown out of the Union. The non Americans will be purged from America.

These people are simply not required and are actually harmful

What are they going to put in their armor to make them go? If CW2 happened, the grid would go down as just one side effect, for a number of reasons. No grid, no fuel distribution, panic in the streets, and the fedgov elite will be hunkered down in continuity of govt bunkers trying to figure out what to do. But all their plans and worries won’t get the electricity or the fuel moving again. So any CW2 would also be a fight for survival to find food, mostly fought at the zip code level with rifles. In that realm, the South would be supreme.

The 8th bombed Germany for 3 years and never completely destroyed their electrical grid or their liquid fuel infrastructure. The 8th AF did a hell of a job reducing cities to rubble though.
