Boston bombing suspects did not have valid handgun licenses

The two brothers suspected in the Boston Marathon bombings, who police say engaged in a gun battle with officers early Friday after a frenzied manhunt, were not licensed to own guns in the towns where they lived, authorities said on Sunday.

But neither brother appears to have been legally entitled to own or carry firearms where they lived, a fact that may add to the national debate over current gun laws.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, who was killed in the shootout with police, would have been required to apply for a gun license with the local police department where he lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

But there is no record of him having done so, according to Cambridge Police Department spokesman Dan Riviello.

Even if he had earlier received a gun license from somewhere outside Cambridge, that license would have to be registered with Cambridge police upon becoming a resident of the city, Riviello said. In Massachusetts, gun licenses are issued by municipal police departments.

The older brother was a Green Card holder (not a US Citizen), and thus would not have qualified.

The younger brother is 19, and you must be at least 21 to qualify.

If they new what the friggin’ CURRENT LAW was this would not be a story.

and people wonder why conspiracy theories sprout up after an event like this.

try this one i heard on the radio driving in today:

gun control bill soundly defeated in us senate. bammy comes out upset.

following week, bombings in Boston occur.

instead of focusing on the primary cause behind the bombings, the nyt uncovers the story these guys had unregistered guns in attempt to reignite the gun control debate.

is it beyond bammy and his ilk to pull something like this??

Laws suppressing the enumerated constitutional rights of citizens only creates a burden for the law abiding citizens. For only the law abiding obey laws.

Criminals and terrorists would not be concerned whether they had a permit or not. Nor would attempts to restrict access or owenership of classes of weapons keep the lawless from obtaining them. They only stop the law abiding.

Some fool gun grabber will put forward the specious argument that because weapons are available to the law abiding, that it makes them available to the criminal/terrorist. However, once again, that unsavory will find a way to obtain weapons regardless of how unavailable they are to the law abiding.

I went to classes and got my CCPC...

Now, if only politicians would pass meaningful laws, this whole nightmare of murder would not have happened. Frinstance, they could have banned CCPC such that the bros would not have had these bombs out of view in backpacks, and instead ALLOW OCPC, thus alerting the nearby public to give them a wide berth, and thus saving their lives.

So the criminals/jihadists/terrorists were already in violation of existing gun laws. However, they'll just implement more gun laws and that will make a difference in the future!

How can these people have any credibility?

The real question here is: “Why weren’t they arrested?” Aren’t we protected by the laws? Isn’t the Police Department supposed to “protect” us?

Gun control laws are so controversial and actually not necesssary.
Those who place their faith in laws stopping criminals can pursue a less contentious path.

Liberals should just propose a law making it illegal to shoot peple with a gun.
Every republican, conservative, gun owner and NRA member would be happy to help them pass it into law.

A law like that would stop gun violence in its tracks without infinging second amendment rights.

The Colombian drug lords by their guns direct by the case.

They sell the drugs and guns to Mexican drug dealers.

The Mexican drug dealers manage to get tons of those drugs into the USA every week, but liberal bed-wetters think that if honest Americans are disarmed that magically the criminals here won't get guns?

That would be a fun law to introduce in order to demonstrate the absurdity of liberal gun control laws.

Hey, wait, let’s just say it’s against the law to kill someone!
I read that somewhere.

Agree. It might slow them down a bit, but it won’t stop them from doing the crime.
Desperately needed, but will probably never happen:
Close the borders and ENFORCE the law.
Give the non-citizens and illegals the boot.
Re-open the mental institutions. Lock up the mentally ill that are a danger to themselves and society
No more life sentences for murder/rape - hang them - in public.

Wow, I think that EVERY SINGLE ONE of the comments on the Al Reuters piece mercilessly mocked it and the idea that it was a valid argument for more gun people control...

Hopefully, people got the message from the lock-down during search for #2. If the MA gun laws are this strict, and only going to get stricter, maybe you had better do whatever you have to, to make sure that you and your family can defend themselves.

The “Law” be damned. Your lives and your families lives should be too important to trust to these idiots.
