Rand Paul calls on conservatives to embrace immigration reform (March 19, 2013 Article)

WASHINGTON — Sen. Rand Paul is calling for conservatives to embrace the cause of immigration reform, outlining a proposal that would grant some form of legal status to the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants after the federal government has certified that the border is secure.

Paul’s proposal, outlined in a speech to the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in Washington on Tuesday, carefully avoided the term citizenship. Instead, the Kentucky senator said he sought a middle ground that would include a multi-year process of granting visas to undocumented workers that would hinge on the annual verification of the security of the U.S.-Mexico border.

Paul echoed the key finding of an internal review from the Republican National Committee that called for the party to recast its image in order to attract minority voters, saying the GOP must change the perception of the party as anti-immigrant.

Latinos, should be a natural constituency for the party, Paul argued, but “Republicans have pushed them away with harsh rhetoric over immigration.”

No time for them to pay tribute to the victims of the terrorist attack, only to their so called “immigration” bill.

I hope for their political sake Boston has already passed the “anger stage” of this ordeal. It may come back to bite them.

It would also be interesting if the law was written in such a way that it would STOP at 11,000,000 Illegals being given Amnesty.

The Dems are LOW-BALLING the number...lying as usual...we need to call them out.

Yeah, I think we should embrace immigration reform too.

Reform it to the way it used to be, when we enforced borders, didn’t advertise in Mexico to “Hey, come on up north! We gots lots of free money, goods and services to give you!”.

Re-form it to permit as many LEGAL immigrants that want to go through the paperwork, wait in line, have skills to offer, employers posting a bond for them.

Re-form it to take all the money that the illegals are collecting from the taxpayers, and spend it on some additional immigration clerks to process the applications turned in through our foreign embassies by people who seriously want to become citizens, or have a good mutually beneficial reason to come to the USA temporarily for a few months or a few years.

But reform it the way all the damn politicians and lefty activists? Hell No!

Amnesty of any kind would be betraying this country, and no true conservative would do this.

What we really need is the umgud plan.

No more birthright little welfare citizens
No more public assistance to illegals
No more Earned Icome Credits for illegals

We don’t have to round them up and deport them, just turn off the magnet.

I am thinking that conservatives need to start drafting Ted Cruz to run for president in 2016. We should settle on one very soon and it looks like Rubio and Rand have sadly touched the third rail and ought the lies of the Rove Machine.

I don’t understand the republican death wish...never will. All they have to do is stick to their guns and say no immigration bill or debate until the borders are secure and then send out the troops to explain why to the American people. They need to be focussing on taking the fight to Obama and the democrats on a whole host of things. This is doing nothing but enraging the base..that is it. Hispanics are not going to vote for them no matter what unless they are conservative in nature to begin with. This is just stupid.

He said this on Tuesday at a Latino conference at which he presented a prepared speech.

The media is running with it.

Randie is caught.

Bad timing, Bucko.

Good for those conservatives in the fence re RP. Now they know. he’s at the very least using the 11 mil number. A game ender for anyone talking about this. Walk away from that conversation. Better things to do like going to the supermarket, waterproofing boots.

But RP, no.

Is that you Obama? How many times are you going to recycle old stale spin? Paul has NOTHING to do with the amnesty being push in Congress right now.

He is no better than Marco Rubio. Even the “new model” Repiblicans have no hesitation in destroying the nation to promote their own personal ambitions. Disgusting.

GOP must change the perception of the party as anti-immigrant.

How about pro-American?

"Republicans have pushed them away with harsh rhetoric over immigration.”

No they push them away by threatening the welfare state (healthcare and education are the big issues with Hispanics, immigration comes down the list). If they want to win Hispanics they need to give up on tax and spending cuts and support "free" healthcare, higher minimum wage, things like that. Any takers for that?

Remember: the right to remain is the amnesty. Citizenship has nothing to do with it (indeed may not even be something Hispanics care that deeply about once allowed to stay).

Indeed Republican reticence over citizenship is about protecting their jobs from new voters while they threaten yours (and your wages) with new workers. This is driven by fear of the donor class, not fear of the Hispanics
