On Columbine anniversary, survivor says gun bill fight isnít over yet (Make it stop!)

Katie Lyles was a sophomore at Columbine High School when her math class was interrupted by the sound of gunfire on April 20, 1999.

She fled the class, and survived. But by the end of the day, she would find out that her lab partner from science class and one of her teachers were among the 13 people killed by a pair of seniors who went on a shooting rampage that day.

Fourteen years later, Lyles, now an art teacher at an elementary school in the same Colorado community, decided to become an advocate for expanded background checks and other gun safety measures after the mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut on Dec. 14. In the aftermath of that tragedy, Lyles became alarmed when some gun rights enthusiasts suggested that teachers or volunteers should be allowed to carry concealed weapons into school to prevent the next shooting.

With the help of her teachers' union, the National Education Association, Lyles has lobbied lawmakers and shared her personal experience as a Columbine survivor and teacher to try to get new gun laws passed. She testified in front of the Colorado statehouse for stricter background checks and limits to high-capacity magazines, which eventually passed and were signed into law in March.

But her advocacy on the national level was not so successful. On Wednesday, senators refused to bring a background check bill to a vote, dealing a significant blow to President Barack Obama's stated goal of passing what he calls commonsense gun reforms. The Senate came five votes short of clearing the procedural hurdle that would have allowed lawmakers to actually debate the bill.

Columbine happened under Klinton’s anti “assault rifle” bill. The perps were not singled out just like the terrorists. Background checks do not work for criminals and he insane.

Katie was interviewed on The Weekend today by Joe Pags. Her advice on how to keep schools secure — in lieu of armed security — was to keep the doors locked.

Really.

I don’t understand these people.

This is the way I see it. I might have to hide under a desk, or stay behind locked doors of my home as some religious zealot or other lunatic runs about shooting and maiming, but I WILL NOT COWER DOWN, if I am armed.

Don’t they see the benefits of being armed? What is wrong with them?

I thought they shot themselves....

Well perhaps that is not the best example then. There are plenty of others, however. By the way, I can imagine the standard liberal counter-argument: “the police will stop them”. In that case, in the perfect world of liberals, there are 2 classes of people with guns: cops and criminals. Are they so stupid that they can’t see the flaw in that?

I wonder if the cops were closing in on them or they had only enough ammo to off themselves, but, yeah, if one of the teachers had a gun, those two losers may not have killed so many.

You liberals keep talking about “common sense” legislation, Katie. In the 30+ years I have closely followed the politics of gun control I have yet to see you gun grabbers put forth anything that contained common sense.

Background checks are a joke.

Locking dangerous people up and keeping them locked up works.

They never EVER do anything to enforce existing laws that might actually reduce crime. Why in the world would any rational person take them seriously? The same thing applies to border security and illegal aliens.

Yeah, apparently SWAT teams were moving through the building when they found the bodies in the library. I suppose they didn’t want to be taken alive.

Has anyone asked this bonehead if she would rush a gunman that has to reload?

"Heard parents were liberal"

Yes and they had their kids placed on prozac, which is a mild psychotropic drug. It eliminates the need for parents to discipline their children, or teach them right from wrong (what's the point if you don't know anyway). A psychoactive drug can either make someone less crazy, or someone who is not already crazy, crazy.
