They just cancelled our chili cookoff. They should be more concerned about air quality at the event.

I’ve also got a big ole cast iron cauldron I wanna cook something in. I just need to put together some kind of tripod to hang it over a fire.

If it's authentic, it was probably last used for doing laundry, making soap, or rendering lard. You'll want to clean it.

I've got trivets for using pots in the fireplace. In the field, just cut 3 sticks and hang it.

That was yesterday. Now because of the Ricin thing, Harry Reid wants people to get a background check before they can buy rice.

“It’s not a ban on rice,” says Reid, “It’s just to keep rice out of the hands of criminals.” He promised that it would not lead to rice registration or confiscation.

The American Rice Growers Association immediately responded by saying something so profane that it is not legal for publication in 45 US states.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg immediately purchased 400,000 metric tons of rice for his own personal use, and is now demanding that rice be outlawed in New York City, which the New York City Council agreed to put into law even before they knew what they were agreeing to, as usual.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is now banning the sale of rice in Chicago, unless each seed is microstamped with a unique identification number, using a technology that will never be developed.

Senator Dianne Feinstein then went on a racist rant about how “rice-eating radical Republican Tea Party Asians” are responsible for much of the rice related terrorism in the United States, and how large volume cooking woks and chopsticks should also be banned.

Most MSM shows have called for a “national dialogue about rice cookers.”

Anybody know where I can get a new seal for a WWII-era National Victory pressure cooker? I’ve got one, NIB complete with all the paperwork I got at an estate sale, but it needs a new seal....

There are all types of pressure vessels that could be used as well. When I was a paint room foreman, I was surrounded by pressure pots from 1 pint size up to big old 25 gallon monsters.

We had one of the big ones develop a crack in the lid once and had to evacuate the paint room, shut off the compressor and wait till the pressure equalized to replace it.

Up here in the ‘burgh (at least in the countryside around it), pressure cookers in homes are about as common as guns. We do a lot of canning.

Years ago when I had a second cousin going into military intel the FBI showed up to question me.

They asked questions about her but I got the distinct impression that they were checking me out.

Also ban potato ricers which can turn otherwise peaceful potatoes into poisonous ricin. Or at least our Congressidiots might believe so.

My mom use to use one back in the 70s and 80s to can stuff. She was always really nervous using it because she knew what steam pressure could do. Dad always warned her if that little valve on top stopped whistling to head for the hills because it was going to put that thing into orbit. When the whistle would stop momentarily, the adults in the house would all turn and look nervously.......than after a moment it would start letting off steam again and everyone returned to “as you were” status.

The sound of dominos being shuffled. Weight stops rocking. Heads turn.

Weight resumes rocking, dominoes go back to being shuffled.

The memories and smells of childhood.

We lived through it.

Three good solid pieces of re-rod, fastened together at the top with a couple of hose clamps, a chain, and an S-hook, should do the trick. I think you can buy one for around 45 bucks.

You don't know what's been in that cauldron, so I concur with cleaning it WELL. Cast iron has pores in it, so you will want to boil it extremely hard with lye for a good long time, then boil with 2-3 changes of water. And if there is ANY chance that something really nasty (pesticides, etc.) has been in it, just use it for a display piece.

NPCA - soon to be a highly-funded lobby group, sending representatives to argue with David Gregory every Sunday.
