It started as a British folk tune, first recorded by the Kingston Trio in 1962. Flack slowed it down drastically so that it almost stands still, and she turned it into a classic. It came in at #3 this week.

Where were you on Thursday, April 13, 1972?

I was at Saarland University in Saarbrücken, Germany, studying nineteenth-century German history, the history of socialism, post-WWII East European history and Russian. On Thursday, I would have been going to class and hitting the books, but I would certainly have been looking forward to Friday evening, when we would have our Stammtisch, or "table for regulars," a party at which we would socialize and make merry.

Saturday, when the student union was closed, I would go into town to eat, most likely at an Italian restaurant. In only a couple of weeks after arriving, I had eaten at every Italian restaurant in town.

Here are some of the hits of the day:

• Don't Let Him Touch You--The Angelettes (a moderate hit in Europe that went nowhere in the US, but it seems to have finally taken off on the Internet)

• Am Tag als Conny Cramer Starb (The Day Conny Kramer Died)--Juliane Werding (a song about a doper who dies of an overdose--the melody should be familiar if you followed the pop charts at the time)

• Amarillo--Tony Christie (a big hit in Europe, but not in the US)

• Sweet-Talking Guy--The Chiffons

• How Do You Do--The Windows

• Ich Will Betteln, Ich Will Stehlen (I want to beg, I want to steal)--The New Seekers

• Schöne Maid (beautiful girl)--Tony Marshall

• Der Puppenspieler von Mexiko (the puppeteer from Mexico)--Roberto Blanco (I like this one far better than the English-language version by Tom Jones, in which he gets on his liberal soap box)
