How North Korea Could Destroy The United States
Investor's Business Daily ^ | April 5, 2013 | IBD EDITORIALS

National Security: The administration moves an advanced missile defense system to Guam because it knows a single low-yield nuke detonated at high altitude could send America back in time a hundred years.

The announcement Wednesday by the Defense Department that it would soon deploy the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense System (THAAD), a missile defense system inherited from the Bush administration, to Guam underscores the seriousness of the threat from North Korea, whose actions, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel rightly said, "present a real and clear danger."

This move comes after the Obama administration reversed its previous scuttling of Bush administration plans to increase our ground-based interceptor force in Alaska and the deployment of two destroyers equipped with Aegis missile defense systems, the Decatur and the John McCain, to the region.

Some observers dismissed it as familiar bluster when North Korea's 28-year-old raging runt, Kim Jong-un, signed an order for North Korea's strategic rocket forces to be on standby to fire at U.S. targets in front of a map that included Austin, Texas, as a target.

But other observers are concerned that a specific target may not be what the possibly imploding North Korean regime may have in mind.

The three-stage missile North Korea launched last December that also orbited a "package," which experts say could be a test to orbit a nuclear weapon that then would be de-orbited on command anywhere over the U.S. and exploded at a high altitude, releasing an electromagnetic pulse (EMP). That would fry electronic circuitry and the nation's power grid.

“Just where do you plan on getting the electricity to run all of your electrical devices that managed to survive?”

Well actually you should be protecting batteries and objects that run on batteries.........among other items

I think the threat of an EMP attack is over rated.

The radius of effect would not be that large from a single nuke and the effect on electronics would not likely be that severe.

We and the Russian detonated hundreds of atmospheric nukes. EMP was noticed but it wasn't a game changer. Yes, a most of our components aren't hardened, but then a lot of them are inadvertently hardened via their location.

And the Norks aren't going to deliver a hydrogen bomb, but a low yield nuke with a low yield EMP.

Ahhh... a rare voice of reason amongs the hysteria that so many Freepers are subscribing to. We are a strong and smart people - made even stronger by our stockpiles of privately owned defense tools.

I can’t believe how the media is “hook, line, & sinker” victimizing so many normally steadfast Freepers.

It’s sad.

Even a few weeks of no EBT card working would result in our cities literally exploding. Even if the power grid and the internet came back up a few weeks later, our cities would already be wrecked

Again, they only have a very low yield nuke and it’s doubtful they could even launch it....

If Russia or China did it with a high yield nuke that’s entirely different....

So if the NK was able to muster and successfully launch (BIG IF), I didn’t say it would be pretty but hardly a death blow to our entire nations infrastructure.... And the timeline to repair would be relatively short.....

Those large cities affected would have to be placed under martial law.

NK is not taking out the entire US with a single low yield nuke EMP pulse.

“Tell me oh wise one, why does it take weeks and even months to get the electricity back up after something as localized, relatively speaking, as a hurricane?”

I was born in the mid forties and we didn’t have electricity till I was in my teens. And no running water till I was in my late teens. We had a good life...

Today I would just go out and start up the standby generator.

You are touching on a very truthful point in the idea that there a chuck of FR that have planned for this situation. So much so that they pretty much welcome the idea of an apocalyptic US for the simple (but sorta scary) idea that they are tired of sitting around all their survival gear and not being able to use it.

“The Chinese and Russians could also do this.”

Why do it directly when your proxies North Korea and iran are capable and just waiting for you to give the go ahead?

When it happens, whether from North Korea or Iran, if US submarine and naval forces based outside the continental USA are able to respond the response will be against the client state and not China or Russia directly. All China and Russia have to do is decide how to split the territory, once the slaughter is over when the starving population devolves into anarchy.

North Korea only has nuclear capability because China and Russia permit it and have facilitated it. North Korea has provided substantial aide to the Iranian nuclear program. Again, it couldn’t happen if China and Russia weren’t allowing it.

It isn’t hard to figure out where this is all heading. When it does, thank Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski for spiking the bipartisan bill in 2008 that would have shielded the electrical grid from EMP. Also thank the free traders whose deindustrialization policies since 1990 have resulted in the US having no manufacturing capability to replace key grid components, including large transformers, after an attack. We now import them all. Not to worry, the Chinese occupation army will bring them.

I am not saying launch nukes except at NK or the perpetrator(s). Just emps (yes I know they are technically nukes). Preventative leveling. I have no problem being set back a few years I am prepared and have the property means to sustain it. I just do not want us open to invasion because we chose a “higher road” and were above bringing everyone back in time with us.

There are worse things than having to rebuild our country after an emp attack, like having to do that while learning to speak Chinese or Russian.

Do most of the RED counties have water sanitation systems that run without electricity?

I lived in RED county suburbia for years. Nobody had their own water well. Few people had a fireplace. Surface water was MILES away. After 3 days it gets dicey with no clean water.

Suburban So MS and La prepped for Katrina. We knew she was coming. We know what to do in case of hurricanes. We were self sufficient long enough after Katrina that we made it.

How many homes in RED county suburbia do you think have even a weeks worth of food and water? How much of their food needs refrigeration? Oops, no fridges!

Do most of the RED counties have hospitals that can operate without key equipment or supplies? Don’t get sick!

Do most of the RED counties have grocery stores that stock themselves? How many grocery warehouses are located in the suburbs immediately around large metro areas? Hint: most of them.

Do you think your RED county neighbors ALL have a years supply of both clean water, food and a means to heat their homes in the winter?

Do you think all the populations in the blue cities will just stay put and starve?

Most of RED county infrastructure goes through cities. Your comms would be down, probably forever, if the cities burned to the ground.

Along with the people who run and maintain the bigger grid components.

You might be alive. But, to coin a phrase from Lucifer’s Hammer, you’d not ‘Control the Lightening’ for decades.

I believe everything you say, except us being invaded. We have nuke subs capable of destroying the planet on patrol 24/7. Any attempt to boat a landing force over here would give away whoever was behind the attack.A fleet of Russian ships caught in the Gulf of Mexico would result in a party that wouldn't end well for them. And we aircraft groups placed in places that wouldn't be affected by the initial attack. Now, your assessment of the potential damage caused here in the states is spot on IMHO.

Well put. People love a chicken little story, but it isn’t quite as easy as it is portrayed. And even if it was, that nation still has to consider what the SSBNs will do to them in return.

Mutually assured destruction works just fine. And the Norks aren’t stupid. They have simply been conditioned over 20 years that bluster and threats, followed by a minor provocation, results in fool. fuel, money, supplies, and nuclear reactors being given to them.

And they correctly assess that the America-hating, bowing, gay marxist in the white house will appease them.

Your standby generator might be a large door stop after an EMP attack.

Does your water well have a hand pump capability?

"Only" the leeches in the big cities are enough to wreck our economy, when 50 million EBT cards flash ERROR and die.

Imagine our 30 biggest cities in riots worse than post Rodney King or MLK, and going downhill from there.

What happens to our economy when suburban commuters can't and won't travel into the cities?

There are not enough police, feds, military etc to quell 30 major city-wide riots that get worse and worse each day as starvation turns to rage.

When the music stops: how America's cities may explode in violence
