Pastor slams religious right at Obamas' Easter service
CBS News ^ | March 31, 2013

Posted on 03/31/2013 8:59:59 PM PDT by Rennes Templar

President Obama attended an Easter service with his family today at St. John's Episcopal Church near the White House, and the Pastor delivering the sermon at the service veered into political territory when he slammed the religious right for living in the past and lionizing "the good old days."

The sermon at the service, delivered by Dr. Luis Leon, an Episcopal pastor who delivered the benediction at Mr. Obama's second inauguration, took a turn for the political when the pastor decried those who wax nostalgic about the way things once were.

"I hear all the time the expression 'the good old days'," Leon said. "Well, the good old days, we forget they have been good for some, but they weren't good for everybody.

"You can't go back, you can't live in the past," he added. "It drives me crazy when the captains of the religious right are always calling people back...for Blacks to be back in the back of the bus, for women to be back in the kitchen, for gays to be in the closet and for immigrants to be on their side of the border."

"What you and I understand," Leon said, "is that when Jesus says, 'You can't hang onto me,' he says, 'You know it's not about the past, it's not about the before, it's not about the way things were, but about the way things can be in the now.'"

Luis asked his audience, "Will you accept the invitation from our Gospel today to see things with Easter vision, recognizing reality in a different and new and wonderful way?"

"Today the choice is yours," he said. "Jesus Christ is risen today - that's the proclamation. May God bless you with Easter vision now and forever. Amen."

We can contact the Rev at stjohns-dc.org to let him know what we think of his "sermon".

Seriously speaking, these are not Churches. They are political clubs staffed by political thieves. Somewhat different variations of popular televangelists of the Benny Hinn and Joel Osteen types.

Christ said “My House is The House of Prayer But You have Made It A Den of Thieves”

1910 US good ole days. Population about 100 million, 6 percent graduate high school, 20 percent cannot read, but for the entire nation that year we only had 230 murders. To equal that today based on current population, the entire number of people murdered in 2012 cannot exceed 700. Chicago alone, had about 530 murders. US has about 12,000 murders a year. So Pastor what did the people do in 1910 that we fail to do in 2013? Maybe one of the problems is churches today do not teach God words and adhere to the Bible and require those who attend church to do the same!

Excuse me. The ‘Right’ doesn’t want Blacks in the back of the bus. We want Blacks, and everyone, to be able to own the bus if they wish.

It is your side that keeps them subjugated into their own class boxes. Your side is creating a caste system to rival any we’ve seen before.

Well, don’t ask obama about it, because I’m sure he didn’t hear anything.

It doesn’t matter what he’s talking about. He is talking to Obama voters.

I would imagine he means everything conservative that is religious, as opposed to conservatives that are not religious.

I would also imagine he speaks for the religious left - way left.

Yeah, what is the “Religious Right''? Is that different than the "Atheistic Left''?

The concept of Christian charity has been evolving.

Now hatred and slander are acceptable components of Christian charity as long as they are directed at someone "on the Right" (however that is defined).

I don’t think there was AIDS or illegal immigrant crime back then either.

Disturbing thing is, one may attend church now, and learn that sin (sodomy) and crime (illegal immigration) is OK. Begs the question, why go to church, when you can get the same schpeel on MSNBC?
