Cowardly Congress,Ruthless NRA,and an Impotent Obama Conspire Against Assault-Weapons Ban BARF-O-LA
National Journal via Yahoo ^ | March 20, 2013 | Ron Fournier | National Journal

I don’t have the words to describe the cowardice of Congress or the depravity of the gun lobby, which conspired to kill the assault-weapons ban. I can’t explain the apparent impotence of President Obama who vowed to “use whatever power this office holds” to convert the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School into commonsense common good.

Fortunately, Mike Lupica of the New York Daily News found the words:

Any fool knows that [Adam] Lanza couldn’t possibly have killed as many children as quickly as he did on the morning of Dec. 14 without an assault weapon in his hands. So how does the president and any other big politician who allows the gun nuts from the National Rifle Association to win again answer the larger question about weapons that make killings like the elementary-school massacre ridiculously easy: If not now for a ban on these weapons, when?”

His must-read column was illustrated by the pictures of 20 slain Sandy Hook students and this headline: “Shame On U.S.”

The ban on assault weapons sponsored by Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California apparently died Tuesday with barely a whisper from media outlets or the White House. Black bunting should have hung from every window in Washington.

In fairness, the gun lobby deserves most of the blame for creating a political climate in which any regulation of firearms is viewed as an attack on the constitutional right to bear arms. This as much a financial issue to the NRA and its industry allies as it is a constitutional one.

First, I imagine the NRA is happy to take credit for preventing the federal government from infringing on a basic human right that, in the words of the Second Amendment, "shall not be infringed". I'm not sure why that phrase is confusing to the socialists. As much as they want government to hold unlimited power, our government has no authority to do so. Perhaps the author should move to Cuba or North Korea if he prefers those systems.

Second, I'm amused at the attack on the NRA as only after money. Life members of the NRA, including me, would not see any need to fund the NRA if we didn't see extremists like the author, Obama, Pelosi, and Reid as threats to our freedom. It's liberals who guarantee that the NRA will remain well-funded. Conservatives consider the Bill of Rights to be settled law and wouldn't even think about defending those rights through the NRA if not for those on the far left fringe who want to violate our Constitution.

Ron Fournier USED to be the so-called 'objective' journalist most often the feature writer for the USA TODAY about firearms issues.

I wonder if he had any anti-gun bias....?????

ALL JOURNALISTS MUST BURN.

Really? Honey child, I can think of four ways to kill way more than he did with no guns at all.

At least two of them don't even require a visit to the store.

Erick Erickson of RedState just said on his radio show that Dianne Feinsteins Assault Weapons bill now only needs 50 votes plus Biden to pass in the Senate. He says we (the people) have been set up.

Wait until someone commits such a crime with a shotgun. Quicker kills, easy to reload-especially against unarmed children, messier and with substantial collateral damage. The only way to respond is with a weapon, not words. NRA spread the truth - and it hit a nerve with the liberals and helped change the mind of the general public. Reality is a bummer, but then we live in a real world, not the ideal one envisioned by liberals.

He shot himself.

He could have killed as many people with a muzzleloader. Were 6 year-olds going to gang up on him?

The police were going to sit outside, Columbine-style, until the scene was "secured."

A psychopath in a truck or a van could do far worse damage when crowds are concentrated than someone with a gun. Or a can of gasoline. However, that does not fit the template for radical change.

5 minutes for a hundred rounds on target at close range and you must have an AR to get it done. What a load of stupid crap written by a gun ignorant fool and liar.

Did this moron ever watch a combat handgun competition or hand-gunners shooting pins?? I will answer that question, no he does not have a clue or is just writing bold faced lies.

So which is he, gun ignorant or a liar, or both???

It is time to take off the PC gloves and hold people like this responsible for what they write. If they do not know what they are talking about then rub their noses in their line of crap until they find out what the provable facts are.

I can run a hundred rounds out on target in way less than 5 minutes with many different weapons that would still be totally legal after this POS AW ban was passed.

If this liberal liar actually has a brain he is keeping it where the sun doesn't shine to protect it from sunburn.

The Dem/libs have been engaging in a steady push to infringe on our right to keep and bear arms for decades. And this is how it has been working out for them in the last two decades...

And in the last two months... (Dec. 2012 and Jan. 2013)

MOLON LAVE! WE'LL SEE YOU IN 2014. ;-)

Mike Lupica needs an answer to his question of if not now then when?

Mike, how about never? How does never work for you, Mike?

I’m not prepared to ever give up my rights to an asshat like you. How does that work for you, Mike?
