Being White in Philly
Philadelphia Magazine ^ | March 2013 | Robert Huber

Posted on 03/16/2013 6:10:28 PM PDT by The people have spoken

Subtitle: Whites, race, class, and the things that never get said.

My younger son goes to Temple, where he’s a sophomore. This year he’s living in an apartment with two friends at 19th and Diamond, just a few blocks from campus. It’s a dangerous neighborhood. Whenever I go see Nick, I get antsy and wonder what I was thinking, allowing him to rent there.

One day, before I pick him up for lunch, I stop to talk to a cop who’s parked a block away from Nick’s apartment.

“Is he already enrolled for classes?” the cop says when I point out where my son lives.

Well, given that it’s December, I think so. But his message is clear: Bad idea, this neighborhood. A lot of burglaries and robberies. Temple students are prime prey, the cop says.

[...]

At the same time, white Philadelphians think a great deal about race. Begin to talk to people, and it’s clear it’s a dominant motif in and around our city. Everyone seems to have a story, often an uncomfortable story, about how white and black people relate.

I work with a lot of black women and I love almost all of them. We all get along and talk and laugh and work well together. But we were having a luncheon last year and I looked up and noticed one table with all black women and my table was all white women. I don’t think it was purposely done, it just happened that the different races chose to sit together. Weird.

I remember hearing about an emergency room doctor at the University hospital being held up at knifepoint by a black kid. 4 nights later the good doctor was hovering over the black kid in the emergency room-the kid had been knifed.

You do not have to be a moron to talk about race.

Certainly you will be called racist-—ignore that

Sticks and stones. Being called a racist doesn’t bother me at all. I simply say that I am no more racist than Maxine Waters, Al Sharpton, or Barrack Obama.

The truth.

Why is it ok for every black in the House to belong to the CBC, for Hispanics to belong to the Hispanic Caucus, and there is no White Caucus.

You want to find racism? Start looking where it is.

I would advise any white person who attends this public meeting and intends to tell the truth to go there armed.

I would expect to see a lot of whites there apologising for the story and sucking up to the mayor.White guilt a-holes will be everywhere, while those who would tell the truth will be frightend to do it.

The safety of anyone who goes there with the truth cannot and will not be guaranteed.
Whatever you say do not give your real name or address if you do not wish to become a victim.

If you’re in Kansas (really I mean the Kansas City area) and you want a “good boring man who is orthodox Catholic” here’s a suggestion (a serious one):

or

right across the border in Missouri:

Good, orthodox Catholic men. They’re not necessarily boring, but I think you are tough enough to handle a little excitement.

Go read the anecdotes about the make ups of tables during the breaks on the set of "Planet of the Apes".

Those similarly "made up" and costumed sat together in groups...

Sounds like one of BHO’s study groups, meeting convened, meeting over, problem solved.

Well counsel, you certainly have my prayers. There is no way on earth that I could live in or near those cesspools.

When I read threads like this, I am reminded of just how blessed I truly am to live in the sticks and on top of my mountain. Last week, a neighbor watched a cougar run off with one of my ducks and that is about as dangerous as it gets around here.... poor duck.

Stay safe.....

I attended college in Newark, NJ (Newark College of Engineering). Sometimes I would take the Amtrak to Philadelphia (the Amtrak ticket was cheap then). While looking out the window when approaching the North Philadelphia, I saw some city blocks that looked like Dresden after the bombing.

I felt the same way about the Spring Garden Station stop on the way to Reading Terminal in 1983.

Not much has changed in the past 50 years in the neighborhoods he is talking about. It was much the same then.

Great response lol.

I’ve seen your posts many times and didn’t think you were as hardbitten as this last one sounded to me.

I appreciate your keeping your cool in response to my being wise.

I’ll keep an eye out for a good fellow close to your description. I bet you deserve one.

I grew up in Philly and attended Temple.I lived with my parents and took a trolley car and the subway every day.It would’ve been suicidal to live anywhere within 20 blocks of the school.
