For many Americans, the phrase "young single mother" conjures up a picture of a teenage high-school dropout. But that image is out of date. Teen pregnancy rates have been declining for two decades now. Today's typical unmarried mother is a high-school graduate in her early 20s who may very well be living with her child's father.
Despite her apparent advantages, however, she faces many of the same problems that we used to associate with her younger sisters. If 30 is the new 20, today's unmarried 20-somethings are the new teen moms. And the tragic consequences are much the same: children raised in homes that often put them at an enormous disadvantage from the very start of life.
Thanks in part to TV shows like "Girls" and predecessors like "Friends," we tend to think of today's 20-something years as a kind of postadolescent transitional period: Young adults move in and out of jobs and careers, hang out at cafes and bars with friends, test drive romantic partners and just try to figure themselves out.
This pop-cultural depiction is accurate enough for the third or so of Americans who have a four-year college degree, but it's a long way from the reality of most 20-somethings. By the time they turn 30, about two-thirds of American women have had their first child, usually outside of marriage.
Indeed, 20-somethings are driving America's all-time high level of nonmarital childbearing, which is now at 41% of all births, according to vital-statistics data from the Centers for Disease Control Prevention. No one is good enough for these women to marry, so they just borrow their sperm and then vote for the government to support them and their children. Women like these used to be called “sluts,” but now they’re just “Democrats.”

They are not single. Most will be married to government. The government will be their, and their kid’s, life-long companion that will provide, food, phone, shelter, healthcare, transportation, and enough welfare money to be able to get anything else they need. Too bad their companion’s job is to go out and steal from those who work for a living.
So what is the result of the government paying for babies for single mothers but not if she is married but living with the father.
Lots of information in that article, but like most all on this subject it doesn’t tell us how many of the twenty-something, lower and middle class single moms are relying on government programs for part or all of their financial support.
With fewer decent jobs for the non-college grads, some combination of low paying work, children out-of-wedlock and government programs has become of a way a life for more and more Americans.

SNAP, WICs, TANF, Section 8 vouchers, multiple religious food pantry weekly raids, School Breakfast, School Lunch, you name it. Each year, they also can go to Walmart and have Jackson Hewitt fill out their 1040EZs for free and get an instant Refund Anticipation Loan (for a modest JH loan fee of course). Most walk out of WallyWorld with a $4000 PLUS refund check for taxes they NEVER paid!
No W-2? Don’t worry. Yesterday I spotted an Obama Voter with a sign on the back of the car that essentially said “I can print you up a fake W-2 for your EITC return”....
I will say that there are also tons of 20 something males who have “sired” a huge number of children with out the responsibilty to support them.
I am amazed these days when my daughter tells me “Oh he has X kids by different women...” She never even says the words “had been married...”
It’s an epidemic, frankly.
It needs to be addressed; but will not be, so long as we allow compulsion driven neurotics to dictate policy.

Don’t call the mom a slut, try to find the “dad”, good luck with all the guys she’s with. Call Maury for a paternity test.
Don’t stigmatize anything. Present it as normal.
First try it on the black family. No welfare bennies if you’re married and dad is around. More welfare bennies if you have more kids.
Get around to programming people dads suck, aren’t needed, they are just going to rape the kids anyway. Despite all evidence that shows they are vital for developing healthy kids into healthy adults. We survive bad moms and dads and have forever.
40 years later the rest of the population is desensitized enough not to care if it happens to them.
50 years later we have Slut Pride, a reality show praising a guy for fathering 11 out of wedlock kids with 10 different hoebags, and we wonder why we’ve got feral packs of blacks in the cities flash mobbing and killing, and you also have to wonder why we’re supposed to care about people who don’t have any self-respect, self-control or self-concern for themselves doing stupid, permanent things.

It is their goal to destabilize the American family. With strong American families, the Socialists cannot get the newer generations to worship the Government. Sadly, their plan has been quite a success lately. It started in the 60’s with my generation. Free sex, free drugs, no responsibility. Sorry, America. Those of us who reject our Baby Boomer generation are trying to turn back the tide but, with all the Leftist teachers/professors it is a tough sell. Self-reliance is a diminishing standard in this country. Heartbreaking.

What’s amazing to me is that young women have unprecedented access to birth control, but STILL are having children out of wedlock at increasing rates. So it’s clearly not problem of access to birth control; it’s more a problem of not bothering to USE it. In this respect, Planned Parenthood has failed miserably, in their stated mission.
I do a lot of charity work with unwed mothers, I help them to get their start.
Interesting observation, but may actually be true. Another strange thing- it now seems that if you get married in your 20’s you and your husband are expected to wait ten years or so before having kids- you know, save money, work on careers, etc... If your are single and in your 20’s however, it is almost expected that you will have a child and no one thinks anything about it.
As I expected...most comments on this thread are directing a hefty amount of vitriol at the single moms—you know, the “sluts.” But is it really fair to call them sluts? Isn’t a slut a chick that sleeps around? Clearly, sperm magically appeared in the wombs of these women...otherwise, an equal amount of vitriol would be aimed at the gigolo-deadbeats who deposited their seed within said sluts, correct?

The term “single mother” suggests a level of independence that is seldom actually there. There’s “Uncle Sam” as you mention — providing welfare cheques, day care subsidies, public schooling, health care, etc. In the case of “baby-daddies” with money; there are child support payments, that may leave the father impoverished. (Many of the fathers would be willing to step up and move beyond the baby-daddy role — but, the mother relishes her “independence” more than she does creating a stable family life for the offspring.)
Lotta truth there, but I think it is relative. The single mom having seen the grungy side of parenting appears a lot more mature than the 30-something with the ticking biological clock. Also the younger mother has life after motherhood to look forward to. She can even go clubbing with her daughter within a decade.
Our society is right on track...to collapse.

“Opportunists” comes to mind.
There are a number of pregnant and delivered young women within my sons age cohort. They often refuse to marry the young men. Seems as though these women think that until baby number two or baby number three is evident, that marriage is out of the question.
What man wants to be saddled with that kind of princess?
Calling them what they are, i.e., sluts, in no way diminishes the slime of the sperm donors.
There are, to be sure, a woman here and there in this group who is not a serial bed hopper but who made foolish choices with just one jerk.
Women in our culture in the not-too-distant past held themselves to a much higher standard than these females. And it is the moral decline of women that is contributing more than anything to the decline of our culture, as women are the ones who civilize men. That’s just the way it is.

Well, when we were nose to nose, my toes were in it and when we were toes to toes, my nose was in it.
That was the reason for the 'Womens Movement'. It helped women degrade themselves by encouraging them to be as irresponsible as they thought men were, when it comes to sex. By doing this, they released women from this responsibility of civilizing men, and we've seen the result among whites, blacks and Hispanics. It has caused instability in our society which is what they wanted all along, since the movement was always more about Socialism than womens' rights anyway, abortion rights notwithstanding.
