Detroiters pledge uprising during state takeover: ‘Make sure you are prepared and you will survive’
Motor City Muckrake ^ | 3/13/13

Councilman Kwame Kenyatta and a packed room of Detroiters warned today of an impending revolt against state intervention, urging residents to stock up on canned food and supplies.

“Even the Bloods in the hood fight for their territory,” Kenyatta said during a 20-minute monologue on the civil rights struggle at today’s city council meeting. “You are going to have to drag me out of here for me to leave.”

Kenyatta cited Frederick Douglass, a former slave who became an intellectual and civil rights icon, because of his position that black people must sacrifice their lives, if necessary, to win freedom and the right to vote. Many in the audience stood up and applauded.

One by one, Detroiters pledged to take to the streets once Gov. Rick Snyder appoints an emergency manager, which is expected Thursday or Friday. Others threatened to block the entrance of city hall.

“Save up and purchase food, canned goods and water because you are going to see a new civil rights movement,” pledged Marie Thornton, a former Detroit Public Schools Board member. “I won’t give up my right to vote. We are going to shut down freeways and we are going to disrupt the economic system.”

Added Valerie Glenn, a community activist: “Make sure you are prepared and you will survive.”

Protests so far have been nonviolent. Demonstrators slowed traffic to a few miles per hour on I-75 and I-94 in the past week. But that’s mild for what’s to come, some warned.

What about black Detroiters who aren’t prepared to fight?

“We have fought for everything we have; how do you sit on the sidelines?” Kenyatta asked.

Glad I don’t live in Detroit. Glad I don’t have to BE in Detroit for awhile. Glad I don’t live in Wayne County period.

Kevyn Orr was one of the people with Chrysler's bankruptcy.

I'd congratulate him on the new gig, but it's more like condolences with this mess.

Kwame (former mayor of Detroit) Kilpatrick, the greatest criminal in Michigan history,

I have to go with Ed McNamara, but he's smart enough to never get caught.

I-96 is East-West. I-94 is SE to NE. I-75 is North to South, then Southwest. The Lodge is NW to SE. The Southfield cuts through the West Side North to South.

I thought I94 was east west

You are right. It is east/west. But when driving through Detroit, the actual compass direction is north/south.

I suppose they planned to get the interstate through the city as rapidly as possible and made it pretty much a straight line though!

Meanwhile, Pres__ent Obozo is in Illinois talking about Alternative Green Energy.

Because of the Sequester, he couldn’t afford to bring the Magic Unicorn along with him, so he had a bottle of Compressed Unicorn Farts to show the Press.

Obviously, he couldn’t have the Dog and Unicorn Show at the White House because his Wife thinks he’s too messy when he plays with his Slavish Butt Buddies in the Press Corps.

Well, not to be a judge, but a man of his qualifications might not come cheap. And I DO have an altruistic streak that warms well in the prescence of like. I would really like to appreciate that much of a fellow American. RIGHT, windflier???

shut down what? a pile of royal SH*T? Detroit sucks. It sucked in the 80s. It sucked in the 90s. It sucked in the 00s. and it will suck forever because it is the end game of liberal theology. Can’t be fixed - needs to be leveled, returned to pasture and woodlands. Just be sure to push the inhabitants northward, not south.

Scratching my head here. I don't know who Kevin Orr is, except that Darren McCarty says he was with the Chrysler bankruptcy. I'm totally unfamiliar with the details of that, so I'm stumped for an honest reply.

windflier, this is Kevyn Orr.

I think you have a misapprehension, or a shying away from truth. You do know my nephew, Sgt Evan Vela. You do know that I have no money, no influence, no bone to pick. Except for that one little thing. Lie to GOD and take that lie to the world and then TRY to make me disbelieve what HE said. And for that I WILL fight to the death.

Apparently, he’s a good bankruptcy attorney, but that is as much as I know.

They’re all pissed-off about their licence to steal getting revoked.

But isn't it reaching the point where the question is: Steal what?

What is there left to steal in Detroit? Aside from garbage?

This could be a good thing. A city full of people totally dependent on government handouts learning to fend for themselves. They just might become conservatives! :p

What Detroiters? The city is all but empty. What they REALLY mean is anything is a good for an excuse to riot and loot.

I think you have a misapprehension, or a shying away from truth.

Huh? Don't know why you'd think that. I'm a conservative, which means I strive to live with the truth. And I do.

You do know my nephew, Sgt Evan Vela.

No, I don't know anyone by that name. I have no idea who he is.

You do know that I have no money, no influence, no bone to pick.

Well, ok. A whole lot of us meet that description, including me.

Lie to GOD and take that lie to the world and then TRY to make me disbelieve what HE said. And for that I WILL fight to the death.

Alrighty. Not sure what the context behind that statement is, but I don't disagree with it.

As to the balance of your post, it's all pretty mysterious to me. Do you have me confused with someone else here? I know that you and I had a little disagreement here recently, but I feel like I'm walking in on someone else's conversation.
