Jorge Mario Bergoglio, SJ (born December 17, 1936) is the current pope of the Roman Catholic Church, elected on March 13, 2013, and taking the regnal name of Francis I. Prior to his election, he served as an Argentine cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. He has served as the Archbishop of Buenos Aires since 1998. He was elevated to the cardinalate in 2001. He was elevated to Pope in March 2013.

Jorge Bergoglio was born in Buenos Aires, one of the five children of an Italian railway worker and his wife. After studying at the seminary in Villa Devoto, he entered the Society of Jesus on March 11, 1958. Bergoglio obtained a licentiate in philosophy from the Colegio Máximo San José in San Miguel, and then taught literature and psychology at the Colegio de la Inmaculada in Santa Fe, and the Colegio del Salvador in Buenos Aires. He was ordained to the priesthood on December 13, 1969, by Archbishop Ramón José Castellano. He attended the Philosophical and Theological Faculty of San Miguel, a seminary in San Miguel. Bergoglio attained the position of novice master there and became professor of theology.

Impressed with his leadership skills, the Society of Jesus promoted Bergoglio and he served as provincial for Argentina from 1973 to 1979. He was transferred in 1980 to become the rector of the seminary in San Miguel where had had studied. He served in that capacity until 1986. He completed his doctoral dissertation in Germany and returned to his homeland to serve as confessor and spiritual director in Córdoba.

Please explain the “Jesuits” thing. A liberal sect?

The Jesuits have lost their way. I was at a Kateri Conference up in Gonzaga University, a Jesuit school, and in their bookstore they had a book, "God - our Father and our Mother'

Seattle University philosophy professors Daniel Dombrowski and Robert Deltete have authored a book entitled A Brief, Liberal, Catholic Defense of Abortion, in which they argue that the unborn child is not "a human person in some morally relevant sense" until very late in pregnancy when "sentience" begins, a term they use to define the capacity to perceive pain. In one part of the book, they go so far as to assert that performing an abortion on a "nonsentient" child is no more troublesome than mowing the lawn. Dombrowski and Deltete also argue that their pro-abortion position is "more compatible with Catholic tradition than the current anti-abortion stance defended by many Catholics and by most Catholic leaders," which rests on a "shaky foundation" and should be "altered or dropped."

A Jesuit Catholic University decides that “domestic partners” should get the same benefits as married couples. Notice that the term of “domestic partner” is used, which might be a local particularity but might also be a clumsy attempt not to say (oh, that word…) “same-sex marriage”.

“The fairies in what nation soever they converse have but one universal king, which some poets of ours call King Oberon; but the Scripture calls Beelzebub, prince of demons.

The ecclesiastics likewise, in whose dominions soever they be found, acknowledge but one universal king, the Pope.”

“And upon this rock I will build my Church. . .” Here then Christ teaches plainly that in the future the Church will be the society of those who acknowledge Him, and that this Church will be built on Peter.”

Official church doctrine, that is one of the many benefits of being real Catholics. We know the rock that we stand on. The Pope is responsible to those who acknowledge Him. If you assume that a church leader is responsible for Christians attendance of services, then all would be abmissmal failures. God has His role, and pretending to assume it , is original sin.

When the fairies are displeased with anybody, they are said to send their elves to pinch them.

The ecclesiastics, when they are displeased with any civil state, make also their elves, that is, superstitious, enchanted subjects, to pinch their princes, by preaching sedition; or one prince, enchanted with promises, to pinch another.

Peter was not just called the Rock to which I shall build my church....you might want to read what Jesus also said Peter was to be.

Malachy prophecy?......lol

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2001/01/20/world/main265822.shtml

“I have the joy to announce that on Feb. 21, the feast of the throne of St. Peter, I will hold a consistory in which, breaking yet again the numerical limit set by Pope Paul VI ... I will nominate 37 new cardinals. Here are their names,” John Paul said, going on to read them, one by one, during his usual Sunday noon appearance from his studio window overlooking St. Peter’s Square.

Other prominent names include a Vietnamese, Monsignor Francois Xavier Nguyen Van Thuan; the archbishop of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Jorge Mario Bergoglio; the archbishop of Westminster, England, Cormac Murphy-O’Connor; and the archbishop of Caracas, Venezuela, Ignacio Antonio Velasco Garcia.

.................

That’s good enough for me....lol

john21:16

He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Shepherd My sheep.”

In other translations it was feed my sheep...basically the same....Pope Francis failed miserably at that.

All of the Biblical references say that Yeshua is the Rock.

Just go to one of the on line concordances and scan for the word “rock” and you will get your eyes opened.

Well, as to be expected, libs are already tearing him apart.

1) They are outraged because he’s white.

2) They claim he supports the torture of women and children.

3) They claim he supports the rape of children by Catholic priests.

The rule for what someone will be called in a Spanish-soeaking country is similar to what he would be called in an English-speaking country: a person’s name usually is kept the same (although a local nickname may develop), but for historical figures it is usually translated (e.g., Cristoforo Colombo is Christopher Columbus in English and Cristóbal Colón in Spanish), likely because names were translated to the local language back in the olden days. It is also always translated in the case of popes (instead of using the official Latin name), and is often translated in the case of foreign royalty (probably a remnant of the den days—if Queen Elizabeth I was known as Isabel I in Spain, why wouldn’t Elizabeth II be known as Isabel II?).

As for your Spanish class, the teacher probably gave all the kids Spanish names so that you all would practice pronouncing names in Spanish.

But he is an Argentian citizen of Italian heritiage. Yes I realize that, and you are correct. My point was that the Lib media is making his ancestral lineage seem "so different" from his predecessors when its derived from the same continent that all other Popes before him came. They are throwing out terms 'Latino' and 'South American' code words for the Lib Media for "none white none Europeans", total BS since Latin America is like the USA with many racial types including many white people. As if being a Latino (a term originally meant for a tribe in Italy to begin with) or someone from South America excludes people from being white and of European ancestry. If he was a Latin American of African or Asian ancestry, the Libs would be blasting his African and Asian roots from the top of their lungs: "An Afro Latin American!!" "An Asian Latin American!!" Typical Lib BS. They got a white Pople from South America, a White Latino and they don't know what to do or say to distant him from his European origins cause deep down they wanted a none white Pope. Just watch soon they will start to tear down his character because of hs anti-gay stances and they'll turn him back into the 'evil whity with European roots'.

I hope you take a look at post 22, its explains everything.

To a lesser degree we Catholics who are not clergy take a confirmation name of a Saint we admire. Each one of us does so for many different reasons. One of my class mates took the name of Maximilian in honor of Father Maximilian Kolbe who took the place of an inmate in Auschwitz who was to be starved to death.

I took the name of Sebastian, the Roman soldier who was shot full of arrows for his faith in Christ. I did so to remind myself what real faith is and what it might call me to do some day. I took that name to keep in mind I might need to man up if the time comes.

Each name we take is special to each one of us. The Pope changes his name, members of the church simply add the name like a second middle name.

“All of the Biblical references say that Yeshua is the Rock.”

In the Bible, sometimes the word “rock” means a rock, and sometimes it is a symbol for Jesus Christ, and sometimes it is symbolic of something else. In this particular instance, it is referring to Simon Peter. When Jesus spoke to Simon after he had manifested his understanding of Jesus’ mission, He told him that he would henceforth be known as Cephas (meaning “rock” in Aramaic), and that “on this cephas I will build my Church.”

Some people will argue that He couldn’t have meant that Simon Peter was the Rock, given that, in the “original Greek version” of the Gospel, Simon is renamed as Petros (meaning “pebble” in Greek) and that Jesus says that “on this Petra (meaning “rock” in Greek) I will build my Church.” But such persons forget that the dialogue in the “original Greek version” was itself a translation, since Jesus and His Disciples spoke in Aramaic, not in Greek, with one another. *Of course* Cephas had to be translated as “Petros” when used for the name and as the more correct “Petra” when used to mean Rock; “petra” is a feminine word in Greek, and thus would not be a proper name for a man (in fact, to this day “Petra” is a woman’s name in several languages, including Spanish, where it is the female form of Pedro). Had the Gospels been written in, say, French, there would not have been an issue, since “Pierre” is the correct French word for both Simon’s new name and the Rock.

So there is indeed Biblical evidence of Jesus naming Simon Peter to build his Church on Earth. Each person may believe what he or she wishes, of course, but to Roman Catholics this point is quite settled.
