Army suspends tuition assistance.[College foundation extends scholarship deadline]

SIERRA VISTA— The U.S. Army suspended its tuition assistance program on Friday, which will impact many local soldiers who use those funds to take courses at Cochise College, though those already enrolled are not affected.

In response to the suspension, the Cochise College Foundation has re-opened its scholarship application system, extending the deadline to March 20, according to a release from the college. Generally, students need to be enrolled in at least six credits to be eligible for one of the 100-plus scholarships available starting in the fall semester.

Cochise College could see an impact from this suspension before the fall semester and President J.D. Rottweiler said the college will be examining what effect this has on the eight week cycle, starting after spring break.

There have been 1,051 enrollments through the tuition assistance program this year to date, but some students are counted twice in that figure if they take multiple courses, Rottweiler said. The actual number of students impacted by this suspension is harder to estimate, but is likely 1,000 or less in an average year.

While Rottweiler admitted there’s the potential for reduced revenue for the college, he said the college is more concerned about the impact this could have on its students. There are many close to completion and Rottweiler said the college wants to make sure it has the best opportunities available to fulfill students’ educational goals.

“We’ll do everything in our power to make the transition as smooth and easy for students who want to complete their education,” Rottweiler said. Right now it’s hard to predict if this suspension will last a couple weeks, months, or longer.

Soldiers currently enrolled in courses approved for aid through the tuition assistance program will be able to complete those courses, the Army release states.

It does not state whether this suspension is tied to sequestration but does say, “The Army understands the impacts of this decision and will reevaluate the decision if the budgetary situation improves.”

Another Obama betrayal of our military personnel, who he claimed to be very protective of.

Who is the Secy of Defense? Kerry. Who is a self-inflated, narcistic and egotistical friend of Hanoi? Kerry.

Well, he buddy-fu*ked the troops again. “Vietnam wasn’t enough”. (Should be the title of a movie about Kerry’s lies about his Vietnam experiences).

Oh, he also tried to sell out Nicaragua to the Marxist Sandinistas in the 1980’s, and sold out missing POWs/MIAs in Vietnam in the 1990’s.

Well, looks like this traitorous POS is betraying our troops again. At least he is consistent in his treason and “dereliction of duty”.

But, then, again, that IS the Obama Administration and those are its policies.

The GOP has also betrayed our military and has abandoned all reason. They do not care about the military anymore. Obama is a wicked man. We all knew that. however, the treachery of the Republicans makes them Judas.

Question. Is this the GI Bill being abolished, or just college tuition assistance for personnel on active duty?

You’re right. Sorry. Hagel is such a nothing that I’m used to Kerry always being in the spotlight.

Secy of State. Secy of Defense. Two lightweights in control of our security. Enough to make you want to join the IDF.

Seems like it is time to renegotiate your contract with the services.

Wonder how many young kids fell for the promise of tuition assistance only to have it pulled.

Better have it in writing or you’ll get screwed later.

They tried that with the Constitution, but he lawyers just rode roughshod over it.

Ya, doesn’t mean much any more. Then again, it would be a legitimate excuse for an AWOL. They promised, it is in writing, they didn’t comply with their end of the contract, our contract is null and void, see you later.

Make it so unappealing to sign up that nobody is going to volunteer so we’re just going to HAVE to reinstate the draft. Really what choice do we have?

Manipulating Americans is child’s play.

Thge USA is bankrupt!

Tuition assistance is a recent “benny” that was added to induce the manning of the “Volunteer Army” TRICARE for reservista (about $7,000 to $8,000 benefit peer year per reservist) which was added in the last few years will likely go. Why? We are broke!

Yes, I know the DOD is getted screwed. This is small potatoes to what is in store for everyone including the welfare class

For the slow comprehenders, the USA is bankrupt!

My daughter is a soldier, and she has lost tuition assistance.

My son is a Marine and he has also lost tuition assistance.
