President Hugo Chavez died of a massive heart attack after great suffering and inaudibly mouthed his desire to live, the head of Venezuela's presidential guard said late Wednesday.

"He couldn't speak but he said it with his lips ...

'I don't want to die. Please don't let me die,' because he loved his country, he sacrificed himself for his country," Gen. Jose Ornella told The Associated Press.

That's not a very correct view of the Gospel. There was a thief on a Cross that lived a reprobate life and repented at the end. And he's in Heaven. The Gospel is this: Repent with Godly sorrow, coming to grips that your sin is against a Holy God...and that you deserve hell...Just like Chavez...just like Stalin...just like Hitler...just like Mao...(2 Cor 7:10)...Confess and Believe...call...and you shall be saved (Romans 10:9-14). Period.

Now, that being said, I also highly doubt any of these understood their need for a savior because their sin was an offense to a Holy God and the wrath of that Holy God rested upon them (John 3:36). But had they understood that...repented...and placed their faith in the finish work of Christ...then the Bible promises salvation. Too many have worldy sorry about their sin...and not Godly sorrow. They think, somehow, their righteousness makes them BETTER than those mentioned above...when in fact, all of our righteousness...the best part about us...is but filthy rags (IS 64:6). We are ALL unclean and need to be washed...and HIDDEN in the Blood of Christ.

Rewards? Not so much...but only as one escaping through the fire (1 Cor 3:15)

What many miss is that between repentance and forgiveness is penance.

My Bible says Jesus Christ.

What many miss is that between repentance and forgiveness is penance. Highly unlikely any of these tyrants, including Chavez, passed through that stage.

Are you saying that Christ's work on the cross isn't sufficient all by itself?

Interesting. Please explain the thief on the cross.

he wasn’t sincerely contrite or insincerely contrite. He wasn’t contrite at all. You are correct though, that if he had repented from being a murdering traitorous thief, God would have forgiven him.

If Hitler, Mao, or Pol Pot repented at the hour of their deaths, are they now in Glory?

If so, Heaven has gone to Hell in a handbasket.

So you think the healing is instantaneous when Christ is accepted by a soul? That there is not a leading and a healing process that takes place over time and study?

You posted, in part: What many miss is that between repentance and forgiveness is penance.

Not to get all religious, but not everyone believes as you do (and that is perfectly ok by me, for the record).

My belief is that honest acknowledgment of God as God, and Christ as Savior, confessing one’s sins, is sufficient for salvation. I don’t know when the last shot at that is giving by God (I think of the parable of the workers in the vineyard, where the workers who show up just before quittin’
time get the same pay as those who were there all day— not sure when “quittin’ time” is...).

But not everyone believes as I do...

That there is not a leading and a healing process that takes place over time and study?Ask the thief on the Cross about that when you get to Heaven.

Really? So salvation depends on yourself. Something you must do in the way of works. Another false Catholic teaching.

Then why do people accept Christ and then shortly thereafter fall off the wagon?

I think study and time does not neccessarily lead to salvation, but that study and time can lead to instantaneous salvation. Different people require different amounts of knowledge to accept Christ as Lord. You either believe or or don't believe. No shades of gray.

No doubt, and true repentance necessarily contains the desire to do penance. Without that desire, the repentance is not authentic.

LOL, you got that right.

Catholics don't teach that at all.

You miss my point. Once you accept Christ, you may not know all the things you can learn from studying the Bible about how God works and how to wait on the Lord, etc.

After reading these comments, I have only one thing to add: I did not read anywhere in the article that Hugo implored his God and Savior for forgiveness. He only said (according to heresay), “I don’t want to die.”

The usual plea of a penitent sinner is “Jesus, forgive me” or some other such type of remorse. Chavez’s only final remarks were, “I don’t want to die.” He does not sound like a believer in any Being other than his own inflated ego.
