.... Also among those who oppose the EFM (emergency financial manager) move is U.S. Congressman Gary Peters, who said hes deeply disappointed in the governors decision.
All of us agree that the city has serious financial challenges which must be addressed, however I fundamentally disagree with taking measures that disenfranchise the families I represent in Detroit, Peters said, in a statement. .....
Said (mayor) Bing on Friday, The governor has made his decision, and it was his decision alone to make. While I respect it, I have said all along that I do not favor an emergency Manager for the City of Detroit. I will look at the impact of the Governors decision as well as other options, to determine my next course of action. (Read his complete statement here).
Former city council member Sheila Cockrel said she realizes its a tough pill to swallow, but she believes an emergency financial manager is a necessity for Detroit.
Cockrel said a financial manager can do the job without the same constraints as local elected officials. However, she said an EFM cant do it alone.

If I rememeber, it is calling on Obama to pay back the debt that Detroit got Obama elected.
Liberal policy makers “windmilling” over failed liberal policies. Does it get any better than this?
Unless the EFM (emergency financial manager) can tear up ALL the public union contracts and make the insane public union pension plans null/void...
There is no saving Detroit.
All they need to do is raise taxes on the rich and their problems are solved. /s
Why, it's the pride of America. It's where Chryslers are made.
You are absolutely right.
“The review team found Detroits cash-flow deficit is nearly $100 million. Thats on top of an accumulated deficit of $327 million. The city also has $14.9 billion worth of unfunded pension and employment retirement liabilities, according to the review team report. In five years, it needs $1.9 billion to begin making payments on the debt.”
The same situation no doubt repeated (repeating) elsewhere, Philly, Chicago being one of those.
That's like wishing for a root canal!
Humm...freeze union pay and benefits...police and fireman go on strike.. just let the natives burn it down...bulldoze whatever is still standing...
Sell it by the quarter acre. ...start again...
Union thugs start at 7.25 per hour...

Home of the 440 cubic inch engine...
The taxpayers of Michigan outside of Detroit must just love having to pay for this.
Who do you think has been paying for it?
Canada’s busiest border ping.
Does this mean the incompetents who ran the place into the ground would 'just prefer cash'? How charming.
I know, but now more of them know.
To all- please ping me to Canadian topics.
What’s needed is a ban on deficit spending. Borrowing can only be justified for capital projects where the asset outlasts the term of the loan.
FWIW up here it’s illegal for cities to run deficits.
New bridge info.
When Buffalo was put under the control of a state financial control board, the usual lefties whined, too. But it worked. Well, I mean, these things can't do miracles.
People are still leaving the city in droves, but the budget's balanced. That's progress.
What caused this problem? Does this plan keep it from happening again? If you knowingly keep voting crooks into office, shouldn’t you suffer some kind of correction? If they take outside money, then they lose their voting privileges.
Send in the troops—establish martial law and an 8 pm curfew! Investigate all corruption, hang the worst offenders. Search every house for drugs and illegal guns. Make it safe again for kids and old folks even if the gangs must be stamped out like vermin. Control must be established by any means possible.
“just let the natives burn it down...”
Detroiters always had a uncanny ability to burn all kinds of things. My personal favorite was scouting out all of the discarded Christmas trees, standing em up in a snow bank, and, voila, let there be light.
Good plan. Suspend habeus corpus, break those doors down, suspend rule of law. Yeah, that’s it, a plan Akbar Hussein Mao-Bama would love.
Why MI taxpayers outside of Detroit should be willing to “give back” or be otherwise concerned...To quote a longtime local TV news anchor, “After all, we’re ALL Detroiters.”
