OPINION: Emergency Manager Won’t Work In Detroit, Hasn’t Worked Elsewhere
CBS -Detroit ^ | Eric Thomas

Posted on 03/02/2013 11:24:38 AM PST by Texas Fossil

It could come Friday, when a cadre of officials makes the announcement from Lansing. It will start, regardless of whether the voters rejected it or not. It will start, and the only evidence we have to predict the outcome bodes very badly. An already tenuous situation could become worse, beyond the imagination of anyone involved.

What Detroit needs is a Gen. George S. Patton type put in Absolute & Total Control

It doesn't matter who you have in charge. You can not govern the ungovernable.

Confrontation Between TN Police & Inmate Puts Inmate In The Hospital With Broken Bones

The perp in the video had both his legs broken by the cops yet he still refused to comply with their commands to lie down. This is typical of the kind of people that reside in Detroit. These people are of a completely alien culture that is totally hostile to Western civilization.

How are you going to assert control over such people? Especially when they are protected by our Marxist government. The cops in the video were fired and the perp is going to get millions of taxpayer dollars from the city.

depending on who it is, they might just force the whole state to bail Detroit out.

"None of those municipalities have yet to transform into hotbeds of economic growth."

Oh, contrare dear author. They may have not grown, but they stopped the bleeding and sometimes that is all you can do

I think it was either Hamtramack or Highland Park he mentioned, that had something like 83 separate Union Pensions. The EFM froze them, and co-mingled them via his powers, something that couldn't have been done any other way. He stopped the insanity.

This EFM for Detroit will have to do something drastic like layoff the City Council for 19 months of his 18 month reign, or pay them only a dollar so they quit.

If I am not mistaken his scope of power will allow him to do so.

IMHO this EFM is going to need a team of people, each perhaps taking a department, and working 10 to 12 hrs a day 6 or 7 days a week to make rapid changes that have to be darn etched in stone so that a new City Council cannot FUBAR all their work after they are gone.

If the don't get it done in the alotted time, I think Chapter 9 or 11 is the only answer.

I agree with you. The majority in Detroit do not work and most of those that do work for the city. This is a failed city and no amount of prodding will make the bad element in Detroit get jobs and they lack the education to start businesses. No one with any sense wants to relocate to Destroit to attempt to give it new life. There are too many unions and too much crime. Those problems must be addressed first not to mention they will have to rebuild the infrastructer. The place looks and feels like a warzone.

Nothing short of full-scale military occupation and a Marshall Plan will work. In fact, maybe not that.

Bulldoze it and return it to farmland.

The republicans are in control this time and their solution includes creating a pro business environment which is already drawing business to town.

“What they need to do is get Al “Chainsaw” Dunlap out of retirement, if he is still alive and send him in there to run it.”

Still alive at 75...He would be the ideal manager for Detroit. Put all welfare recipients to work cleaning up etc etc etc

Neither has socialism, but that has not stopped them from trying it every where they can.

IMHO, the "real" agenda is hinted at in this comment: "Detroit needs a bailout. A reliable source of funding is required to invest in the “New Detroit” project, which will turn the city into an oasis of urban farming and renewable energy."

Here's my prediction: The EM takes over, makes some high-profile "painful" cuts, and thus establishes his bona fides as a hard-nosed financial manager. Then, he announces that Detroit needs a bailout. He promotes "investment" in the “New Detroit” project by the federal government. Obama then has all the excuse he needs to divert a billion or so to the cause.

Did I say “a billion or so”? How naive. My only excuse is that I’m old enough to remember when a billion dollars was a lot of money. I should have said “$30 billion or so.”

Then the answer is let the city declare bankruptcy, wiping out civil servant’s pensions.
