Poll shows 61 percent of Californians back gay marriage

(Reuters) - California voters favor same-sex marriage by a nearly 2-to-1 margin, a poll showed on Thursday, a month before the U.S. Supreme Court is set to hear arguments over a gay marriage ban approved by the state's residents in 2008.

If the cannot overturn the will of the people in the Prop 8 case at the Supreme Court they will overturn the will of the people by holding another election.

Gay Marriage lost four times in Maine. Last year it passed. Now they call it “Settled Law”.

If 61% of Californians truly want gay marriage and vote for it at the ballot box, then more power to them. We live in a federal system and that is their choice. My issue with this always has been how the Left tries to use judges and the federal government to force gay marriage on a population that does not want it, which has been pretty much every state up until recently.

I voted for Prop 8, but wouldn’t another election be the “will of the people” too? While I hate some results, I have no problem with “the will of the people” even if they change their mind later.

Having said that, the propaganda from the Left on this issue must be met with truth and facts.

I do not have much hope for Prop 8 to be upheld by the SCOTUS as I suspect that Kennedy and Roberts will vote along with the liberals to overturn.

And while overturning California’s Prop 8 will not directly impact other states’ Pro Family laws, the Justices will draw a roadmap to show how every other Pro Family Marriage law can be overturned.

The issue before the SC is whether the voters have a right to decide. As someone else posted, if California approves it in the next vote that’s up to them.

So 61% support gay marriage but it lost by popular vote. That would mean at least 50% didn’t support it.

Opinion polling is usually flawed on this issue, for a number of reasons. But we have actual votes we can look at.

Prop. 22, CA’s first marriage amendment, passed by 61% in 2000, the same % NC passed theirs by last year, so it is reasonable to think NC is 12 years or so behind CA on the issue. CA’s Prop. 8 passed by 52% in 2008, swinging 9% in 8 years. The thing with this is if our masters in black robes deign to uphold it, they will simply try another popular vote to repeal it. All they need is 50% + 1 vote, seems like some sort of repeal on prop.8 5 years after it originally passed would probably pass now.

That’s the danger, to the state in the modern era, marriage is simply whatever judges, pols, or 51% of voting public think it should be at any one time. And that’s it.

People not voting and another younger bunch of folks turning of age and registering to vote.
This is a ballot box non issue. The next time it is put on the ballot in California it will easily pass.

It would be better for the voters to repeal Prop 8 than for the SCOTUS to overturn.

But, as it is now, the dominos are falling and it is just a matter of time when all states have gay marriage.

The ones that only passed their amendments in the 50% ranges might fail now, those that passed then in the 60% ranges will last a little longer, and so on. I think the highest % for passage was Mississippi with a whopping 86% in 2004, so that will stand for a while if they stick to the popular vote. Of course there could also be an acceleration of the seeming trend, I could see that happening if enough states accept ‘gay marriage’.

I will no longer look into this issue, perhaps even my last post. The issue, all over, is essentially over. "Gay marriage" , of some form, will eventually, before I leave this earth, be available to the vast majority of Americans. Why? Because in the end, it is a social issue, and the majority will choose to accept it.

Long term, this issue is going to be a loser for the GOP, I suggest we drop it.

You can flame if you want, but I think culturally, at this point there is nothing you can really do about it. The trends are clear and strong. Its not even about "giving up", its just, already over.
