A license plate gives police a whole lot of information about you, and law enforcement is supposed to protect those details. However, one local sheriff admits he gave a driver's name and address away, and the reason he did it is downright bizarre.

>>The police probably shouldn’t have looked up the license plate. However, it is a pet peeve of mine that businesses that maintain restrooms for their customers get taken advantage of by people who stop but do not purchase anything.<<

I can assure you the businesses don’t feel that way. Not only are you ignorant of the fact that the individual may be a regular customer all but the time you see them, you’re thinking of it like its your home with someone ringing the doorbell to come and use your bathroom. Businesses with public restrooms don’t care if one hundred or one thousand visit them. But the more people that come into their store for ANY reason, the better. If they don’t come in, they won’t buy. If they do, they might.

I will grant you the very small mom and pops feel like you do, but for the bigger chains, toilet supplies cost almost nothing compared to their annual revenue.

I go to McDonalds regularly, I like their Cokes and I get something to eat there several times a week and I often get breakfast for the whole office. This is all at the drive up window. Now there are some days when McDonalds is the closest bathroom and I don’t want anything to eat or drink and I go use their restroom.

Believe me, I have given them enough business that me using their restroom once every couple of months w/o buying anything is not dishonest or rude.

Sometimes I go in and then get back in my car and go through the drive through to get what I want cuz it is going to be faster than ordering in the restarant. Many times when we are traveling my husband drops me off to go to the bathroom, goes through the drive up and then picks me up.

That’s thing about making judgements without the whole story.

Oh, get over yourself. I live on the road in my job. You have to take care of Nature’s call, the last thing you think about is buying some damned piss poor excuse for “food” to do it. You go in, you don’t soil the place, you don’t hurt a damned soul, you take care of business....you leave.

Sue me.

Guess I have to start budgeting for bu***hit fast food whenever I have to stop to please your ilk. What has this country come to......

He probably was embarrassed and wanted to get away as fast as possible.

I worked at a service station during the weekends when I was in high school. It was one which did not offer any service except oil, water, air and gasoline.

During the night I was there alone. I was also responsible for keeping the rest rooms clean. It was really not that difficult.

I had to go really bad one evening and I went in to this restaraunt. There was a sign that said you had to purchase something to use the restroom and I’m reaching in my back pocket to pull out some money and order something and as I approached the counter the woman started yelling that I couldn’t use the restroom if I wasn’t a customer. Whoa, I yelled back and it wasn’t very lady-like, I will never eat there and it has been over 20 years.

A few days later, the woman checked her mail to find a bill from that restaurant, asking her to pay for using their restroom

She should have just written them a nice note and enclosed her $200 invoice for inspecting and testing their bathroom.

Sheriff is supposed to enforce the law, not patrol the potty of a private business

I believe the terms of usage which you have to agree to if you want to use DMV information requires you to swear that it is for official business only. I believe there is also a fine involved for violations.

Unless they have a posted sign the bathroom is assumed to be available to anyone in the building. I have seen such signs in Chicago McDonalds, but the only way it is enforceable is by putting a lock on the door and only giving the key to someone who buys something. The one I went into even hired a security guard whose only job seemed to be potty patrol.

I hope this policeman gets some sort of reprimand. He may say he looked up her identity because he had cause to believe she had committed a crime (which I believe is a lie), but he had no justification in giving out her address to the staff at McDonald’s for their schoolyard brand of vigilante justice.

If one doesn’t want to purchase something, there are roadside travel stops.

Have yet to see a rest area in a city.

Sometimes you have no choice but to find the nearest restroom, or would you rather people just take care of their business on the side of the road? If i’m on the road, i try not to drink soda, so even buying a soda from a fast food restaurant would sometimes be just a waste of money.

If the Flood Zone, aptly named, had a pay toilet then this would have never been an issue, this free rider (pisser) problem

Just wait till Tennessee gets Buc-ee's! That restaurant won't have to worry about people stopping to use its restrooms. They'll be worried about not having anyone stop.

Hey restaurant. Prove I used your restroom. Was it me driving the car? Was it me in your restroom? Maybe all I did was check my hair in the mirror - how would you know? Surely you don’t have surveillance in there, right? Actually, I just went in to see the general cleanliness level of your restrooms - my wife is very particular. When I saw how bad your men’s room was, we went down the interstate another exit.

Using a public restroom in a business is a crime to you? Nice attitude. I hope you at least practice what you preach.

Hey there, Mr. Sheriff. Could you please provide the Penal Code section that you thought had been violated? (I didn't think so.)

That will be Penal Code #1 with large fries and a liter of cola.......free of course.

In my opinion it is just dishonest and rude. If one doesn’t want to purchase something, there are roadside travel stops. It is the old “something for nothing” attitude. It is just too prevalent today.

You're correct of course. The me first entitlement attitude is disgusting.

Maybe there were no family dogs that needed shooting and he had nothing better to do. I wonder what the coding was for the citation or whatever he used.
