There's been a huge shift in the racial makeup of U.S. prisons in the past decade, The New York Times reports.
The Sentencing Project analyzed prison populations from 2000 to 2009, finding the rates of incarceration for blacks dropped sharply during that period: 30.7 percent for black women and 9.8 percent for men.
The report also found a major spike in incarceration rates for white men and women during the same period, according to The Times. The rate for white women increased 47.1 percent for white women and 8.5 percent for white men.
Rates of incarceration dropped slightly for Hispanic men but jumped 23.3 percent for Hispanic women.
A dramatic shift in a prison population is highly unusual, the Sentencing Project's director Marc Mauer told The Times. From the Times:
"But the trend is clear, Mr. Mauer said, adding that no single factor could explain the shifting figures but that changes in drug laws and sentencing for drug offenses probably played a large role. Other possible contributors included decreasing arrest rates for blacks, the rising number of whites and Hispanics serving mandatory sentences for methamphetamine abuse, and socioeconomic shifts that have disproportionately affected white women."

The Fair Sentencing Act of 2010 will serve to further equalize the disparity between whites and blacks in prison.

If they were really serious about the drug war, they would do it like Singapore, if you are caught dealing, death penalty. Until then, I know they really aren’t serious about it.
Maybe Meth users should organize. You know, they were once depressed about their life situation, and now because of the wonder drug meth, it makes them “feel” better. I know, “medical meth”!

I can just see the guy on death row for hacking 3 people to death suing “Big Meth” for a lifetime of pain and suffering.
I suspect that if you managed to shut down all the small time meth cooks and offer the business to a large pharmaceutical company, the company wouldn’t touch it based on the liabilities alone.

Put the government in charge of distributing them, like health care. They would cost five times as much but no one would have any.
How about PC judges exercising disgression in sentencing.
I'm still waiting for the alcohol lawsuits. But I'm not holding my breath - brewers and distillers never claimed their product was free from health effects.

They've managed to not tax into existence a significant black market in alcohol. (And note that by all accounts the profits from black market smokes are a drop in the bucket compared to those from banned drugs.)
Alcohol can claim that its intent was not to be addictive and not harmful in normal use.
Meth and cigarettes/smokeless cannot make those claims. Both are highly addictive and harmful even in normal use.
More of the same trend I’ve been noticing for a number of years now. A burgeoning White Trash population that is following the same path to ruin as the Black community did a couple of generations ago.

Clearly you've never been to Singapore.
The average Singaporean makes $61K per year, versus the US average of $49K.
It is one of the cleanest places I've ever seen, comparable to German cities.
And the people there are unfailingly civil and helpful.
When you say unintelligent things like this, it doesn't help your argument.
I just saw a local news story about police seeking info on a white kid and a black kid (early 20s) who tried walking out of Walmart with a cart full of stolen goods and beat down the elderly greeter.
Last week it was a story about a white and black kid involved in a home invasion and beating of an elderly resident.

They are arguing that living in Singapore is more like living in Moscow than in Zurich.
Not living up to Zurich standards is not indicative of "Third World" status. Zurich - a bankers' haven of maybe 400,000 people - may be the most wealthy city in the world.
Singaporeans have a higher cost of living than Muscovians - an apartment in Moscow is cheaper than an apartment in Singapore, a used car is cheaper in Moscow than in Singapore - but they also have a much higher average wage.
Moscow is one of the highest crime cities in the developed world. Singapore has one of the lowest crime rates of any city in the world.
The quality of life in Moscow - which is not a Third World city - is much lower than in Singapore.
There is a reason why half a million people from the developed West work and live in Singapore - because the standard of living there is up to the standard to which they are accustomed.
I can see clear evidence that you are correct. Here in the Northwest, the spotted owl and attendant regulations have decimated the timber industry. The more ambitious moved out and changed occupations. The person who really never wanted to work now has an excuse not to work. Welfare of various types keeps them going but at a minimal level.
There is money in meth but most just fill in their hours using it and robbing, fighting, etc. Not much different from hip hop culture except no gangs yet and rural areas spread them out. My daughter is on a hospital group dealing with the effects of domestic violence. Such violence has mushroomed in the past several years. I could go on about such things as the rape and murder of a five year old by a meth user in a family of meth users.
With the shutdown of coal and other industries, the future doesn’t look good. I’ve been blasted for saying the black problem is hip hop culture and no reasonably available employment. The problems are spreading and the white slacker/meth head culture is growing. It ain’t a pretty sight.
Every society has its dregs. Even Singapore.
Not so long ago there was an article about a movement to “equalize” conviction rates based on race.
Blacks were/are complaining that a disproportionate number of blacks were in prison.
And of course the only explanation for the disparity they could come up with is RACISM.
So they wanted government to see that more whites and fewer blacks were sent to prison.
That way everyone would be doing their “Fair Share”, regardless of race.

That could be the difference. But since the cigarette makers are still in business and turning a profit, it's unlikely that nobody would sell a comparably addictive legal drug.

True....the gist of the program I saw, I think a 60 minutes hit job was that it was “understandable pissing” because the Singapore government was draconian and conservative and these poor free-thinkers were understandably rebelling to oppressive authority.
We are on the cusp of the same thing in this country. But it will be the reverse. An oppressive evil government bent on destroying our traditional values. Who knows what form our ‘pissing rebellion’ will take? I think they are anticipating it, thus the hell-bent-for-leather efforts right now on controlling (actually they intend consficating) guns.

True. The “Northern Spotted Owl” was an environmentalist’s construct that divides the same critter by latitude in order to shut down the timber industry.
