Moscow (CNN) -- A meteor streaked through the skies above Russia's Urals region Friday morning, before exploding with a flash and boom that shattered glass in buildings and left about 1,000 people hurt
The number of injured has continued to rise through the day as new reports come in from across a swath of central Russia.
Most of those hurt are in the Chelyabinsk region, the news agency said. The vast majority of injuries are not thought to be serious.
About 3,000 buildings have sustained damage -- mostly broken glass -- as a result of the shock waves caused by the blast
About 20,000 emergency response workers have been mobilized
Amateur video footage showed a bright white streak moving rapidly across the sky, before exploding with an even brighter flash and a deafening bang.
The explosion occurred about 9:20 a.m. local time, as many people were out and about.
One large chunk was discovered in a lake in the Chelyabinsk region, RIA Novosti cited the Chelyabinsk governor as saying.

Other video depicts the pressure/shock wave blowing doors inward as if an explosion occurred just outside the doors..
Be thankful that the Cold War is over for we have a president who just might do what the Hollywood-commie-loving pukes did in the movie "Fail Safe".
To placate their commie heroes the Hollywood crowd had the President of the United States order an immediate nuclear strike on New York City. (At the time I think NYC had a Republican mayor and Obama probably would pick a Republican state to nuke.)

Didn’t the USS Lake Erie shoot down a bus sized satellite a few years ago? I heard that the Russians scrambled interceptors but couldn’t do anything. The US Navy could possibly have detected and brought down this thing.
The energy yield from the explosion was in the kiloton range; bigger than the most recent North Korean nuke test, which was about 6 kilotons. So this one may have been around 10 kilotons.
Good thing it exploded as high up as it did; lower to the ground would’ve produced an enormous pressure wave that likely would’ve caused massive structural damage to those prefab apartment blocks (I live in one - they’re sorta cheaply made, to be blunt). And possibly a serious loss of life as well.

Some fragments may have hit a lake near Chelyabinsk. Apparently, a few fragments have been recovered.
I’m surprised this isn’t bigger news than it is. Something like this happens only once in a lifetime. And this is certainly the first time I can recall of a meteor airbust causing such widespread injuries and structural damage.
“Fail Safe”, the movie, was not a creation of Hollywood, but a best-selling novel, made into the movie, and was also a play.

The book was serialized in three parts, and published in NY newspapers, DURING THE CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS!!!
And, yes, the author wrote the ‘blood for blood’, or ‘bomb for bomb’, scenario as you saw it in the movie.
And to think, as a GI’s kid, living on the airbase, the 6 by 6 general that visited the schools during that crisis told us not to pay any mind to the duck and cover, because it wouldn’t do us any good, being a defensive airbase. Just turn to the light, and it will be over in a flash.
Average daily high temperature in February is a balmy minus 8 degrees Fahrenheit. Having no windows will be a blast.

Seriously, what else could you do? I remember seeing one of those duck-and-cover films, and I laughed. The one I remember, the one with some turtle, basically said that when The Bomb goes off a couple of house down, duck and cover and you’ll be fine.

Basically
1) The earlier in the day, the more TV is focused on women, and many women are much more interested in the cruise ship and the crime drama of a famous athlete killing his girlfriend than some weird science story
2) It’s in an obscure part of Russia with no foreign media
3) The media worked itself into a frenzy over the cruise ship and the payoff was today, and that’s where all the reporters are, and they are not going to tolerate being ignored for their live interviews
I imagine there are a lot of schoolchildren with bad cuts and blown-out eardrums; as horrible as it sounds the only way for this to get more attention would be for Oprah to interview some crying Russian kids.
