Panetta Extends Some Benefits to Same-Sex Partners
KPBS ^ | 11 Feb 13 | Beth Ford Ross

Posted on 02/11/2013 11:10:03 AM PST by xzins

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta announced today he would extend certain benefits to the same-sex partners of U.S military service members.

Panetta's statement reads as follows:

“Seventeen months ago, the United States military ended the policy of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” We have implemented the repeal of that policy and made clear that discrimination based on sexual orientation has no place in the Department of Defense.

“At the time of repeal, I committed to reviewing benefits that had not previously been available to same-sex partners based on existing law and policy. It is a matter of fundamental equity that we provide similar benefits to all of those men and women in uniform who serve their country. The department already provides a group of benefits that are member-designated. Today, I am pleased to announce that after a thorough and deliberate review, the department will extend additional benefits to same-sex partners of service members.

“Taking care of our service members and honoring the sacrifices of all military families are two core values of this nation. Extending these benefits is an appropriate next step under current law to ensure that all service members receive equal support for what they do to protect this nation.

“One of the legal limitations to providing all benefits at this time is the Defense of Marriage Act, which is still the law of the land. There are certain benefits that can only be provided to spouses as defined by that law, which is now being reviewed by the United States Supreme Court. While it will not change during my tenure as secretary of defense, I foresee a time when the law will allow the department to grant full benefits to service members and their dependents, irrespective of sexual orientation. Until then, the department will continue to comply with current law while doing all we can to take care of all soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, and their families.

“While the implementation of additional benefits will require substantial policy revisions and training, it is my expectation that these benefits will be made available as expeditiously as possible. One of the great successes at the Department of Defense has been the implementation of DADT repeal. It has been highly professional and has strengthened our military community. I am confident in the military services’ ability to effectively implement these changes over the coming months.”

If someone has pdf conversion capabilities, they could post the entire memorandum from Panetta, since it is a government website.

In the military, there are some advantages to being married - more pay, permission to live away from barracks if enlisted, medical care, px entry for spouse....but I’m sure nobody would abuse this with a ‘gay partner’ routine.

I was in the Army when Don’t Ask Don’t Tell went into place. Some soldiers who wanted out would jokingly state they were gay. I always had the same response: Prove It :)

So when are these gay goofballs getting the option of moving into the married housing.

If it hasn't changed since my days, the married housing was much preferable to living in the barracks. I wonder how many straight buddies will now decide they are "gay" just to get out of the barracks and get a party pad.

And, thus, the destruction of the world’s greatest military continues.

When we find ourselves unable to defeat the Mexican army, perhaps then the political elites will get it.

Of course, by then, it will be too late.

His “partner” would get his ~250,000+ insurance policy.

How can Panetta grant any benefits to unrelated queers, that congress has limited to only related family of service members?

Did he find that listed under ‘sexual partner’ defined benefits’ in some military handbook?

Will normal G.I.’s be able to give the same benefits to girlfrinds, including base housing? If not, why not?

That is an excellent question. Lots of troops have live-ins, so they could sign that "they're committed" and they "share living arrangements."

See, when you start playing fast and loose with rules and laws, it works both ways.

Why pretend to be gay? Heteros (aka “normal people) can shack up now and call themselves “domestic partners”. People used to punished for such things when I was in the service. Now, I think it will be impossible to punish straight people for doing what is now permitted for gays. This whole movement for gay marriage and same sex unions was always about the money. It makes me wanna puke.

Most bases these days can’t keep uniformed members in housing. A lot has changed. Bases now rent to straight (not military affiliated civilians), DOD civilians, contractors, etc. They opened up a lot of housing the last few years after they went to contracted housing. Military members now have to actually pay to live in base housing. Once occupancy levels drop below a certain amount they open up housing to all.

Gone are the days of free utilities, you now have to pay for your gas and electricity in base housing.

Not all bases are affected by this only the ones who became “privatized”.

Probably.

Just get around it by having your ‘best gal’ wear male(?) mufti and sneak her in...BUT that is going back to the ‘good ol` days.

You will be fine until they have a spot ‘short arm’ inspection.

So, by the time these CLOWNS (sorry Clowns) get through, Larry and Harry, Sarah and Clara will be able to ‘hook up’ aboard ship BUT Bonnie and Clyde will be subject to a ‘courts-martial’ for doing the same.

PROGRESS......

DOMA is probably already dead. They just have to make the announcement. This is just like DADT. Now that they will open up surveys to perverts things will slant even more in their favor.

The DADT survey was only open to a select few unlike all the other useless surveys they are constantly doing which are almost always 100%.

Correct. The left is on a roll, and they know that enough of the electorate either agrees or just doesn't care, that no one will stop them from just overriding Constitutional procedure and doing what they want. Enough of the electorate either agree or don't care as long as they get their bread and circuses on the producers' dime.

not one combat unit guy I know who is still serving got that pathetic survey, I did however see it posted on here and it was a joke.

Most of the survey;s went out to family of military personal of which the republican conservarive President can say the thing was flawed, the survey bogus, it was done for political gain for those in the military and for political gain to the special interests.

There has been lawsuits, disrupt of military law and respect for law, there has been distruptions and that is the truth as I;ve spoken to a couple who has seen it first hand cross dressers in Afghanistan and openly serving homosexuals acting like if they;re on a freak parade.

DOMA will be with the courts and that should go states rights though this admin will overturn the fed part I;m sure and which we had better win and overturn again.

Hell overturn everything what thye have done to the miltiary, a once proud unit of morals, respect, hard work is now being put out as if it were a social civvy life.

Have you seen the pathetic AD for the marines?

The black guy is a marine, is is walking down the road and then into uniform and then showing him helping to give aid somewhere in the world.

now compare the Ryal British marine commando’s AD’s where women are not allowed to be in it and here is one of their AD’s/

http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=royal+marines+recruitment+ads&mid=A9D8246AB651B4801E74A9D8246AB651B4801E74&view=detail&FORM=VIRE1

even our marines where a guy only needs to do two pulls ups as become a joke, and only 3 pull ups for the final test.

Sorry but the miltiary has beocme a joke, women ion combat, cross dressers wearing dresses, homosexuals acting as if they were on a freak parade and acting all sissy and girlie,

it;s a pathetic joke which is not even hard to get into

The paperwork that’s at the link at the end of the article requires, as near as I can tell, 2 things:

1. that you’re sharing the same living space

2. that you sign a document saying you’re “committed” to each other.

if this does not extend to normal couples and families ten it;s time to sue for discrimination.

Once those suits go in the conservative President can state this has not worked, too many lawsuits, too much trouble, too much law breaking and too much paper work, not too mention the trouble with the cross dressers and homosexuals acting up and having sex here and there plus women in combat is not , no go now.

The bogus survey which was given out to mostly military members families was just a political move backed by a few officers which were yes men to the President.

all of this is insane and only ruins the military

Under ‘normal’ circumstances - Yes.

However, you are dealing with liberturds here so - in their way of thinking - you CANT sue for discrimination because you are involved in hateful activities involving ANTI GAY REMARKS, which were brought about when you sued them.

It is complicated...

Somewhat like ‘Catch 22’ (original) ‘You can get grounded if you are crazy BUT the only way to get grounded is put in a chit saying you are crazy, BUT if you were crazy you wouldn’t have been able to fill out the form, admitting you were crazy’.

Or something like that...<:

I think most siblings are committed to each other. So if they room together, they should qualify. And if it doesn’t specify how strong the commitment must be, or the nature of the commitment, then I would think anyone you have a rental agreement with would also qualify.

get it .

I think

push feces wiht a penis and say you are in love wiht another guy who likes the same, get benefits and pretend you are married, deny any other kidn of marriage but want marriage redefined.

is that thus far?

OK then when common sense is applied and questions are asked about this you are called stupid, bigoted, and a silly word which has no bearing called homophobia, those phobia means to live in fear of which millions are not.

OK once called the names, you are supposed to shut up and they can get on wihtt heir play family, play going out and relationships, , if they want children then they can buy or adopt and anyone opposing this will again be called a name, told to shut up.

Is that right thus far

indeed it is, lets look at what stood for morals, respect, tradition.

military, check
churches, check
boy scouts check

They went after all these and only now the boy scouts stand alone but could cave to child molesters .

One only has to look at how they were in the 20’s, they being the radical left wing.
then there was the 70’s and late 60’s but thankfully we got Reagan who they dispise.

Now we have them again.

They wrote the rules for commies 63 so it was hardly a secret what they wanted and how they went about their agenda.

sadly even talk radio won;t discuss this now because they too live in fear of being targetted from the homostapo or they have pals which have sex with feces or don;t want to upset their liberal pals.

If everyone of us spoke up, caleld talk radio, told the media no more homosexual programs, and boycott them, sue them for discrimination like these benefits for queers and not for normal couples
