Actually there were African and Syrian Popes in the first centuries. I think one of the early Popes was also a black African (Nubian) as opposed to the Greek or Berber North African popes

You are right. We’ve had 3 African Popes. Pope Gelasius I (492, Berber North African), Pope Miltiades (314, African but no details as to what part), & Pope Victor I (189, Roman African Provinces which could stretch from Libya to Ethopia).
