Winter Storm Nemo; Historic Blizzard Looms
Weather Channel ^ | 02/07/13 | Dolce, Erdman

Posted on 02/07/2013 5:06:12 PM PST by GRRRRR

Here we go with another freak out about a winter storm. From naming it like a hurricane to generate more angst, to the continuing reminders that it "COULD" be a top ten storm in all time history, the weather guessers are doing the hype dance.

Granted, this one looks particularly nasty, but most sane people will grab some extra milk and get home early Friday before the main bands hit.

Take cover NE FReepers and keep us updated on how it's coming along.

Post lots of pics from your yards and neighborhoods so we can all OOOOH and AHHHH at the precip!!

Above all, stay safe, get off the roads early!!

Here in New England, it's just your typical winter storm. I worked a full day today, even drove to Providence (from NH border) and back for a meeting. Had to be back by 4pm however due to that silly governor order threatening to throw me in jail for a year if I wasn't off the roads.

The one good thing about that order is that at least the snowplows will have the roads all to themselves to do their jobs so when the snow stops, I can go back to my regular routine all that much quicker.

Never once have I "panic shopped" at a grocery store. Nor am I a prepper. It's just that I'm a normal person who has sufficient canned/dry goods to last me a couple weeks. I'm not going hungry - or thirsty, for even if I lose power, I can put cans of beer out in the snowdrifts to keep cold. I'll be fine.

Good to hear.

How much is on the roads?
Are they waiting until later for it to end before they start plowing?

Here in CO, on the high plains where I am, they use MagChloride instead of “rock salt”. Then they throw sand out too..dumaaahs, all it does is make a brown slushy mess.
Something about the NaCl hurting the ecowhatsis.

Be safe, be happy!

Dear GRRRRR,

“How much is on the roads?”

My son reports from Cambridge that it only really started sticking good to the roads as the sun set. Accumulation so far (not on the roads, so far) under 6”.

Of course, banning cars at 4 pm should help the accumulation on the roads pile up quicker.

Islip has got 5 inches in two hours.

They just updated the depth projection for Hartford, Ct. to over 24 inches.

Dear GRRRRR,

“Islip has got 5 inches in two hours.”

Wow. That's a lotta snow in a little bit of time.

Our family has been chuckling so far today, as they told my son up there to expect blizzard-like conditions by noon. By noon, there’d been a half inch.

But maybe it'll all drop tonight.

About 15 miles NW of Portland, Maine, been snowing lightly most of the day, and I just "scooped" about 2-5" of light fluffy from the driveway. Intersections were greasy this morning, plows have been out all day too. I'd estimate the snowfall here at 4", so far. The hype is that we're in for up to 28", and that there will be wind gusts at 50-60 MPH.

We've been through a number of 15-18" events, and those being wet, heavy snow. My sense is this one won't be as tough as those, for snow removal.

Dear Cboldt,

Where my son is, the plows are keeping up so far. Of course, that might get a little tougher if they get five inches in two hours, as reported from Islip.

Indeed. The heavy equipment was out in force in the WalMart parking lot and others, and that was this morning. At this moment, I'd easily dare to make a grocery run. Our street has maybe 3" on it, and it hasn't been plowed since noon, I'd guess.

BUT, I don't pretend to think it's going to be safe enough going all night. Even this AM, there were some serious wrecks (19 car pileup on the interstate near Falmouth, rollovers and off the road on the Maine Turnpike, near NH), and it's tougher going now than it was then. Steady wind, and continuous snowfall. I'm not going out unless there is some sort of medical emergency, and everybody here is restricted from doing anything that might get them hurt ;-)

I like big snow storms, as long as we don't lose electricity.

This weather is just plain crazy.....Hurricanes in the late summer / fall....blizzards in the winter. What’s next?

They're predicting "thunder snow" there's lots of static on the AM radio.

I'm going outside for awhile to watch for lightning.

Thank you. It's a few minutes before 5 am here (as if you can't tell from the timestamp on the post) and it's a "real" storm, that's for sure. We have about 15" since I scooped the snow off 10 hours ago. Still very windy and snowing. No way the car would go through this stuff. Doggie dog won't be getting his morning promenade. 15" is too deep to slog through. When I go out, it'll be behind a snowblower. It's on the chilly side, at about 12F. All utilities in working order, so we've got it made easy ... so far.

Our son in Belmont sent a photo of his backyard. Mid afternoon yesterday - only lightly covered. I think I’ll check and see if he sent one today.

Nothing really 'historic' about this...good snowstorm; that is about it. Eighteen inches seems to be the average around southern Red Hampshire. I am grateful to G-d that we didn't lose power at all (no heat is a drag, to say the least). Many others not so blessed.

One amusing note...there have been plenty of 18 inch snowfalls throughout red Hampshire history, but I believe NO MAIL DELIVERY is a first. That's right...'not rain nor snow' and all that...forget it. No Mail today. Practice run forlate this year, I guess.

I just saw the total at Logan on Drudge and thought well should I remind you of your forecast.

Being of kind heart I had decided not to harass you about the total. Then I see your reply.

The way I see it is you were much closer to being right with your forecast than was doug of upland with his.

only 9” in NJ, not that much wind, hardly a blizzard as the NYC MSM claimed it to be, since nobody watches MSM news too much anymore they must use sensationalism and scare tactics to get people to watch, they just love a storm and a disaster.
