Jack White releases obscure blues records for 'no profit'

'Jack White says he will make no profit by releasing a huge catalogue of pre-war and country blues on his own record label.

The former White Stripes frontman said his aim was to make the rare recordings accessible for everyone.

"It's very important to American history and also to the history of the world," he told BBC 6 Music.

The back catalogue of more than 25,000 tracks is owned by Document records, a tiny Scottish independent Blues label.

White intends to re-issue them all, on vinyl, via his company Third Man Records.

The Document label was set up in Austria in 1986, but is now owned by husband and wife Gary and Gillian Atkinson, who run it from their house in Scotland.

Mr Atkinson said the project came about when White emailed them at home.

"There's over 25,000 recordings," he explained, and White wants to set about "releasing the full recorded works [in] chronological order. It's not a project for the faint-hearted."'

...kind of like "figuring out the meaning of American Pie lyrics" important...

On the “They might get loud” movie with Jimmy Page he sort of reminded me of the Chris Farley character where Chris would be interviewing a movie star and would say stuff like “Remember that movie that you were in when you saved the world by disabling the hydrogen bomb?”. And then the star would say, quite uncomfortably “... yeah ...” to which Chris would say with a big grin “Wow - that was awesome!”.

I recall that Document label. They used to release LPs of complete recordings by just about every obscure 1920s/30s blues recording made. I never actually bought any of them, as my tastes veered much more towards jazz than blues. Although I do sometimes like some of the earlier, vaudeville-style blues singing of the acoustic recording era.

He’s a big strapping somebeach
He lives on Franklin road here in Nashville.....nice digs but not LA ostentatious

Drives an old 50s red convertible around

Stood next to him at a store in Green Hills and was impressed with his stature

No wonder his rep as fighting type

Alabaster with jet black hair...ice blue eyes

Wifey thinks is rock star cute.....she would know given she lived it once
Can play guitar too

Odd voice though

Guess I need to see about a second mortage so I’ll be ready when they hit the market. I believe I might need a new turntable, too.

Wish he’d release them digitally as well. I don’t have anything that will play records anymore.

I like the guy and White Stripes. You can tell he respects real music. His project with Loretta Lynn demonstrates that as well. My daughter just moved to Nashville for her career. Hope she gets to work with him someday.
